Im about to make a winter sock.
I have lots of silnylon at the house, but its hard to sew being slick.
What are some other great materials to use?

Check out Dutch's version of a winter sock on his site. I think you would be able to use Sil if you sewed in a small amount of no-see-um netting towards your head area like he did; it is made to be adjustable for venting as well and his was made from ARGON.

I would definitely steer clear of any non breathable fabric unless you built in a lot of ventilation. I can't say what the proper amount is as I scrapped my non vented sil sock after the first use. I had hoped this would be a tarp replacement, but it has issues. I think some might have had better success with vented gortex socks and iirc one of our wonderful cottage vendors sells a gortex version. Can't recall which offhand.
I've since done a 1.9 ripstop nylon sock; an improvement over the sil with condensation and breathability for sure but still "lacked" for me. No extra ventilation built in. Just wasn't satisfied.
My best success with a sock was actually mock up experiment with some of Walmart ' s mystery fabric (digicam nylon taslite) of all thimgs. It added a great deal of extra warmth, was breathable, and I have yet to encounter any condensation issues even into the upper teens. It's a little heavier, sorry not sure of weight without a scale, than any super light weight fabric, but it's not overly heavy and I feel well worth the weight. My big issue with this creation was sizing it without my uq on. Once I used the sock over the uq, it would cinch up too tight and compress part of the uq.
I've recently built a second model of this using silpoly from ripstop by the roll for the lower third of the sock. I'm hoping this will provide bottom protection from any rain splashing as well as cutting down on any wind that may reach my underquilt. Kind of a sock and uqp in one. Haven't had a chance to try it out but I'm hoping it will provide even more warmth, with added bottom protection, while remaining breathable enough that I can avoid the condensation issues that many socks face.
