    UQ protector

Quick question. I have ordered a Under Quilt 20 degree from UGQ full length (first ever) Thinking about a protector.

    1) Are they necessary and why?
    2) which one shoul I get
    3) do I need breathable or waterproof or can I somehow do both.

    P.S I have a good tarp

    Here is my $0.02:

    1. They are not necessary, but provide a relatively inexpensive and lightweight option for additional protection from wind and potential rain splash on your UQ. If you have a 4-season tarp with doors, and batten it down tight, then the UQ protector has less purpose. However, I like to keep my tarp in porch mode, and the UQP helps with wind protection.
    2. These are really simple items and any of the cottage vendors make suitable protectors. I got mine from 2QZQ, and it is made with expected 2QZQ high quality.
    3. I suggest breathable to minimize any chance of condensation in the protector.

My UQP goes in my pack depending on expected weather conditions (i.e., temperature, wind, moisture).

hawghangar basically answered your questions, but as far as I know, only 2QZ2 makes underquilt protectors. I would go with the lightest option - I think that's Argon 90. Not sure if anybody makes Cuben UQPs. That would probably shave a bit weight as well.

Unless you know what you're doing (read up on vapor barriers), go with a breathable fabric.

OK thanks guys for the info. I wasn't sure if dutch could put one together also or even a DIY. But 2QZ2 would be fine by me.
