I finally made the full conversion to hammock camping and had my first successful camping trip in the new hammock system. I did a 2-night hang on the Lone Star Hiking Trail. The first day I hiked about 10.5 miles from Trailhead #1 to the Caney Creek Camp on the Little Lake Creek Loop Trail. Day 2 I followed the Little Lake Creek Loop about 12.5 miles to the Sand Branch Camp. That left me a little over 6 miles to hike back to the car Friday morning. Overall it was a successful trip as it was the first time using a hammock and first time using my new DIY soda can stove.
I wouldn't say it was the best sleep I've had, but it was more comfortable than a tent for the first time. I'm sure after a few more trips and a proper underquilt I'll find it even more comfortable. For insulation, I slept on top of my REI trekker 1.7 inch pad and created a reflectix pad to slide between the hammock layers. It got down to around 37 F the first night and I was pretty comfortable except for a few cold spots from sliding off the pad a bit. The second night only got around 49 F and I slept a little warm, probably due to having a 20 degree mummy bag for top insulation.
Hopefully more trip reports will be coming this year! Thanks for all the tips I've learned from the forums!
