I used to use a similar setup (but using hardware store rings), and I weight 240+. Worked for me, but I have upgraded to one of Dutch's cinchbuckle suspensions.
Well, I used these straps:

Our Harbor Freight has these on sale right now for $4/pair.
Going to pick some up for use with my daughters' hammocks. The girls weigh less than 100# each so the straps are kinda overkill, but at that price, they're cheaper than DIYs...
I use a pair of orange harbor freight straps rated for 400 lbs. Works fine. I cut the hook off with bolt cutters that I borrowed from harbor freight and just feed the strap through where the hook was.

We also use something similar daily. We do replace them pretty often, but we use them intensely as we're a freight broker.
hmm, a hint as to where to source them might be welcomed by EU diy-ers, if you can, Marius.
I've used the HF yellow straps a BUNCH. Great tree straps for marlinespike/whoopies
