Sewing tarp ridgeline

Ok, I have been practicing on the pieces ripstopbytheroll has generously provided for me. It's been going pretty well... But have a couple questions before i try and tackle 2 winter tarps this weekend.

When I'm done sewing, lay it out and lightly pull on each side of the seam. The holes from the needle grow and i can see through them. Not sure of its normal and the seam sealer will seal it or if I'm using to large of needle.(not sure of needle size)

Horrible picture example but on the left side of the left row of stitches is where it opens up. Won't be able to get better pictures till I get back home in a couple days.

You may want to consider using a Microtex 70/10 needle.

Will do! Probably do for a needle anyways. 4 hammocks, a dozen draw string bags and a underquilt all on one needle.

Definitely use a new needle for each project. As mentioned, a smaller sharp point needle will be better than a larger universal needle. With enough tension, the stitch holes may still open a tiny bit. The ridgeline will need to be sealed anyways. Be sure to seal it under tension.

You're still going to want to seal it. Permatex flowable silicone windshield sealer is what I use for sil. It's cheap, available in any autoparts store (including WallyWorld), and doesn't require dilution before use.

Anyone have some close ups of their ridge line with the tarp hung up and staked out? Id appreciate it!

I looks like you might want to try a flat felled seam. A flat felled seam will use the strength of the fabric in addition to the stitching. This is how most tarp ridgelines I have seen are done and how I do all of my own.

I will try that style of ridge line seam on my scraps. I see 3 steps so I would stitch it 3 times right? I will post some pictures tomorrow night when I get some time.
