    Hammock suspension on porch?

So I've been successfully sleeping outside in my gathered end hammocks for over a year now. Today was so beautiful here in west Georgia and while I was sitting outside on my front porch, it hit me. It would be awesome if I could figure out a way to hang my hammock on the porch, but have it relatively easy to take down and set up. Is it possible that it may be safe to hang from the pillars that are holding up the roof? I figure that the roof above my must weigh quite a lot and I only weigh around 140 lbs? Or is this just a crazy idea? Maybe it would be better to try to install something on the rafters and hang that way.

I personally would try it. If you think about it, your roof takes the weight and disperses it through the pillars. So in theory the pillars SHOULD hold your weight. I would try it but would get yelled at by my dad just because. If you are going to, make sure there is not a long drop in case you fall. BUT DO NOT ONLY TAKE MY OPINION AS I AM ONLY 14.

I hang on my back patio with eye bolts into the supports.

Remember, though, that the heavy roof is putting stress on the supports by pushing DOWN. And you will be putting stress on the supports by pulling SIDEWAYS. While it should hold you with no problem, you want to be careful that you aren't going to pull you house down.

You don't want this to happen:

The problem with the pillars is that they are most likely hollow. Also most pillars today are manufactured by taking many pieces and gluing them together to form the round. If this is the case with yours, I wouldn't trust it. They are made for downward pressure, not sideways.

Hey if you're in one of those antebellum mansions in La Grange it will definitely work.

Lol. I never even thought of the pillars being hollow. our house was built in 1996. so probably not the best idea.

The beam at the top of the posts is a good choice. Connect to two points on the same beam I.e. In line with the beam. You are concerned with pulling the posts toward each other. I wouldn't assume the posts on an older house are better. The posts may be solid, but on older houses the weight of the roof may be about the only thing holding the post there. If you pull it sideways, that wouldn't be good.

My wife bought a hammock stand from IKEA ($70 IIRC) and leaves it on our front porch I been sneaking a hang on it some and I like it pretty good. It is grey and blends with our siding color really well. Just a thought.
