Cuben w/ Doors vs. Winter Palace

How much of a practical difference does the extra width of the winter palace make compared to a standard cuben w/ doors? It works out to ~11" per side, which when pitched at an angle covers less than 11" of extra ground. Does the benefit come from being able to hang the tarp higher so you can stand up all the way? Or from having coverage that comes closer to the ground to block out wind? In what conditions does the extra width make a useful, noticeable difference?

I sold my cuben with doors and upgraded to the Winter Palace for both those reasons. Plus the wider tarp keeps the rain splash farther away from my hammock.

I didn't go for the winter palace, went with the regular tarp with doors. Mainly because the palace is 2.1 ounces more than the standard (and also because my previous tarp was the SuperFly which was absolutely huge and the same size as the palace). That would probably put the winter palace for me at around 14+ ounces with guylines, stakes, and cuben tarp sleeves (my cuben standard with doors weighs 12 ounces with all that).

I have both the winter palace and standard with doors. Love both of then. Anyways IMHO the Winter Palace seems huge compared to the standard with doors. IMHO the the extra width does make a useful and noticeable difference in living space. It also allows me to pitch the sides down to the ground and still have good head room. It allows me to store gear underneath without worrying about splash and blocks wind most excellently. However to save weight I use the standard with doors in the winter and fall hikes and take the palace car camping. The other main reason I got the palace is once my boys get old enough and the wife is ready to I wanted an UL tarp that fully covered her because it makes her feel more comfortable. Also when my son's are old enough to hike it would be a great tarp to all hang out under on the trail should a storm blow in. But solo I'll bring standard with doors in colder weather.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

The Winter Palace is 18% more coverage (in square feet) than the standard CF tarp, so it makes a difference.

I have the superfly, which is comparable to the winter palace, and wonder at times if I really need all that space--it's seriously huge. I'm really really considering upgrading to the cuben standard with doors. Even just the cuben upgrade is a huge weight savings, but I'm just not sure I need the size that the superfly/winter palace offer--ever.
    Keep on keepin' on.

It really depends on the weather conditions you camp in. I started with the standard with doors and got wet, more than once from blowing precipitation. No-brainer for me to upgrade to the Winter Palace.
