WOW!!!! I've been perplexed for a while now how the pros on here can quote from more than one post at a time! NOW I'm in the know!!! THANKS, Shug!!! Now I just need to find someplace where I want to respond to more than a single post, so I can try it out before I forget how!
Hi everyone, I'm new here and have spent a couple hours reading trying to answer my own question with no luck, so I thought I'd ask. Has anyone had a failure using double Whoopi hooks as speed hooks on 1/8 or 1/4 amsteel?
Thank you.
Yes, Scotty Von Porkchop did. Second night. They wear through the line very quickly.
Thank you for the quick respons. That's interesting, I've been using a set on 1/4 for over a month now with 8 night in the hammock and several hours worth of stress testing with very little sign of wear, the worst being some wear on the 1/4 CL on my hammock. I wander way people are getting such different results. Just wasn't sure if anyone had tested them with thicker amsteel. Guess I'll keep my hang low and see how long the rope lasts;-)
I'd imagine your the first to try 1/4" with them. Most on this site use 7/64 for suspension, and those who like to have a little more of a safety factor typicaly just step up to 1/8".
As far as wear, your probably seeing excessive wear on your continuous loop because the turn it makes around the hook is smaller than the rope its self. I believe Amsteel should turn no sharper than its diameter. The hook is about 1/8" thick, so you'll see wear from that sharp turn. I'd imagine you'll see similar wear in the leader line at some point also.
