    Thumbs up Polyurethane coating stripping!

So not sure if this the correct place but I have some 300D polyester ripstop fabric with a pu coating on one side and a dwr on the other. I would like to try to remove the PU coating to gain some breathablity and get a little off the stiffness out. I've seen ppl use isolalcohol, heard washing the material in washer with some softener n bleach would dissolve the PU? and just learned that DEET destroys PU coatings. But my question is what would be the safest/best way eaither to try and remove some/all of the PU coating or if anyone has done this what worked best for you? The fabric is unused and not sewn so just a normal 60" x 3yards sheet. Any input would be appreciated thanks..

The best, least expensive and only real method is to buy the fabric that you want.

I don't see why anyone would have tried this. Seems like a pretty off-the-wall thing to do.

I believe what everybody is trying to say is that it would be a lot cheaper and easier to just purchase new fabric. But if you do find a way, post it and make us eat our words!

Hangloose4, are you trying to modify PU coated MarPat fabric in order to gain the elusive MarPat tarp? If so, I'd recommend searching the forums for "DIY Sil Nylon" and use the 1.1 MarPat fabric from DIY gear supply.

I would try a really small patch of 90% isopropyl alcohol to see if that works. But even of it does, then you need an efficient way to apply the alcohol to 3 yards and remove all of that stripped PU.

A washer might work but I'd be worried that if it did, having stripped PU stuck in the washer for a few loads. Edited: if the fabric is washable, it probably won't have the effect you want.

Being on a budget, I understand needing to work with what you have or not being able to find in the pattern you like. Work slow experimenting in small patches. Let us know what works!

Isopropyl alcohol won't work, PU is very tough and a solvent for it, such as TOLUENE, would probably need heat and you'd still have to get rid of it in solution. What you're asking is technically doable but not economical. The thing is that modern outdoor fabrics are pretty high tech and unbeatable in price just due the economy of scale.

Yeah, I have doubts about alcohol too but thought it wouldn't hurt to try on a all piece if he was already considering it.

You could try oxy clean in the wash. Only half joking...that stuff seems to work on everything. RIP Billy Mayes.
