Cool NC > Pisgah District, National Forest>Jan. 16-19, 2015> Pisgah Winter Hang (PWH-1)

    Well...
You could just spend your upcoming three-day-weekend at home (yawns) instead of in the piney woods. The choice is yours!

ARE YOU READY to be a part of something new? ??
Want to test out your winter gear by car camping where it's cold; but probably not brutally cold?
Have you always wanted to get in on the ground floor and wanted to become part of the folklore?

HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO ATTEND THE PISGAH WINTER HANG AND ESTABLISH THE TRADITIONS!
    LET THE ANTICIPATION COMMENCE!!!

    PLANNING FOR PWH-1 BEGINS!!!

SINCE THE FAMOUS FHV, Florida Hang Five, is so far away from many of us; this year, we're providing an alternative right here in Western North Carolina, Just a few miles from Brevard, NC.

Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, a three-day weekend for many of us, will be the occasion.
You may come as early as Thursday and stay as late as Tuesday!! WooHooo, more time in the cold!
    Thursday JAN 15TH - Tuesday JAN 20TH.

You can expect some great times and some fabulous day hikes near the Blue Ridge Mountains (maybe even some frozen waterfalls). You can learn hanging, cooking and general camping techniques from folks who enjoy helping out and sharing what they know. You can check out all sorts of gear. There will be lots of eating and swapping of tales around an endless camp fire. There will be a gear-swap table and we may have enough folks donating to win some amazing raffle prizes followed immediately by more eating!

You can even car caravan Sunday afternoon, watch the NFL Championship playoff Games, and still return to the piney woods for the evening

Every attendee who signs up on the spreadsheet gets bragging rights for attending the very first PISGAH WINTER HANG and for helping make the PWH-1 a memorable event. The NC Hangs have historically gathered all sorts of folks in the woods: from folks new to hammock camping to hardcore (and not-so-hardcore) backwoods campers and trekkers, kayakers and car campers. Our basecamp site will be in and around a trail-laced National Forest that enables folks to stay close to other folks or to push off into a more secluded spot — the choice is yours. But no matter where you like to set up your set-up, PWH-1 will have something to offer. Also this year, the Pisgah Winter Hang will have flush toilets and hot showers somewhere (~kind of~) nearby; or at worst a short drive to town; or in a motel a few miles down the road!!

New to hammocking? Bring your tent or just drop by and visit for awhile! Everyone is welcome.

WEATHER: Use weather forecasts for Brevard, NC as the dates near.
I'm not sure what the weather will be like but there will be some. Mostly nights are in the upper teens to low thirties and most days are between 40 and 60. Cold snaps could lower those temperature ranges by as much as 10-15 degrees. Warm snaps could raise those temp ranges by the same amounts. We'll be car camping so you can always bail to your nearby vehicle if need be. Test your winter setups without exposure to extreme winter conditions.

The planning committee has been hard at work getting things in line, but our process keeps the doors wide open to anyone with ideas, vision, or just a desire to help out. Got suggestions? Let's hear 'em!

Our model is to have scheduling for those who like to have things planned out while also enabling lots of space for those who prefer to just flow with it. As of now, and given precedents from previous hangs, planned activities include:

Group Day hikes on the local Trails - daily.
Overnight backpacking opportunities away from the base-camp - ad hoc.
Waterfall hikes and photo opportunities- Day with best weather.
General gear show off - non-stop.
Gear Show & Sell - Saturday.
Gearage Sale (swap meet) - Saturday.
    SATURDAY EVENING GROUP MEAL.
And of course—hours of socializing with your fellow hangers and new met friends.
In addition to lots of just hanging around we may even have a professional lollygagging seminar.
    And more….

Cost: There is no cost for anyone to participate in PWH-1.
You read that right - you don’t have to pay to come and have a good time with everyone. So please don’t let cost keep you home.

That said, a mass hang of any magnitude is not free either. Donations of local firewood and securing a suitable campsite(s) are accepted, encouraged even - recommendation: $3 a day per person; and/or bring local firewood!
All funds go to the hang. There is no paid staff and any unused funds are donated to the Friends of Pisgah Ranger District, and/or other similar outdoorsy, do-gooder organizations.

Funds: We are open to someone stepping up to take this over. PM me if you're interested.

Vendors: Any vendors planning on coming or donating raffle items this year please shoot LOKI a PM letting us know you're coming and how we can best serve you.

Don’t wait to the last minute - sign-up and start staging gear in your living room NOW! No, Really!!

Here’s some links to get you started:

Location: Pisgah Ranger District -final location within about 10 miles of Brevard, NC: weather and wishes of the attendees will determine final location. This is a car camping event!

    Map & Directions:
Google maps or GPS to Brevard, NC. We will send out exact gps coordinates and location info later; when the group decides, when we know about how many may attend, and when the weather can be guestimated.

Could be interesting. I have four insulated hammocks in the queue (one of which is my new one). If I can get them done in time, I'll come. Right now I have two other hangs planned before the end of February so I am unlikely to make this one. I'll keep my eyes peeled. The Higher Colder Hang would be nice to do some more prep for.

I wish I didn't already have a campout planned for that weekend. Maybe I can attend the next one.

I'll do my best. That would be three insulated hammocks in a week. Yikes. I do love Pisgah though so we'll see.
