    Hang near Brussels?

    Hi All,

I'm an American living in Brussels, and the thing I miss most in this big city is the chance to go camping. I would love to meet folks of any nationality who would enjoy a good outing! Of course, I don't know the best places to go. Any suggestions?

Hammock camping is still in its kinder shoes in Europe. Wild camping is mostly forbidden and campgrounds are often not adapted for hammocks (missing trees).

Most campings will look like this one in Grimbergen

I'm not from Brussels but I get there twice a year (once in winter, once in summer) for business (no camping).

The Camping "Ciel ouvert" seems to have trees that could permit hanging...

If you own a car, the Ardennes are a great destination, as are the Eifel in Germany and the Vosges in France. Luxemburg has some nice options too.

In the Netherlands, there are a few "pole campings": semi wild camping with often nothing more than a (ground) water tap, mostly in nature reserves. Belgium has a similar system in the Hoge Venen. These are nice for micro outings.

Lijn, can you tell us more about this "semi wild" spots? What do they look like? Are the private? Where are they located?

    Thanks!

You can google for 'paalkampeerterrein' and then use translate to make some sense of the results

Here's a map of the 26 spots in The Netherlands: http://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl/Overna...=Vrij+kamperen

Rules: max 5 tents (sic!), max 2 or 3 nights, no fire.

OK, last one: an overview of the Belgian spots (they're called "Bivakzone"): http://www.bivakzone.be/overzichtskaart.html

Wow, great links! Since I was a child I went to NL for camping-holidays but paalkamperen is new to me. I definitely have to keep it in mind for one of my next trip to NL. Dank je!

m_huber, if you're looking for different spots than pay-campsites where you have to share your place with caravans you will have to go wild camping. This is what I do most. But I always keep off protected areas like nature parks. This seems ok to me.

I would appreciate if there will be a hangout someday.
