    yep...thats what I was gonna point out. I also have a possible solution. I often setup tipi's for gatherings and festivals, and the poles have a similar problem. rain runs down the poles and drips inside the otherwise dry tipi. The best solution is to tie strips of old bike inner tubes to the highest point and this creates a drip collection point which can be re-routed outside of the dry space by a gutter or rope wicking.

    one light weight idea that came to mind now that i am thinking tipi's would be to make a small tipi tarp that wraps around the tree (a tipi canvas is basically a half circle with a bit cut out of the straight side). this would provide the horizontal rain protection and roof with less material. the bottom of the 'tipi' could have a small strip of spring steel sewn in to keep it fully open. At the point where the to sides of the tipi come together they can overlap a bit to create a seal/door, and be attached to the gear shelf or whatever you pack is on.
