I lash together a cross (two 1" dowels, joined with a brass hose fitting, screw together for the upright, so none of the three pieces are more than 24" long) and hang my backpack on it, then cover it with a 50 gallon garbage bag for weather protection. I hang my shoes from a carabiner on my ridge line.

Maybe I'm too prissy (or haven't had a bad critter experience yet), but I hate having to look at my gear on the ground around my hammock or hanging from my lines. I always pack everything away, put my pack inside a durable trash bag to keep it dry and hang it from a nearby tree. My shoes and doggie go under the hammock. In the winter, I'll keep my stove on the ground next to me for quick coffee making in the morning but that's about it. I've just never liked the look of stuff hanging from ridgelines. I suppose I'd get used to it real fast if my gear got dragged off by a critter, but my doggie is good about keeping the critters away so far. Food and smelly stuff are stored in a bear canister away from camp.

I think if I was to hang the pack I would take an extra Amstel continuous loop and run my tree strap through it. Then I would use a beaner to hang the pack from the continuous loop- easy to attach/remove the pack as needed and it wouldn't interfere with the hammock as you could hang your pack on the other side of the tree if wanted...

I keep my bag under the hammock with my shoes next to it. Will probably start hanging it from the hammock suspension soon.
    Is it hang time yet?

After looking at ENO's gear hammock - not waterproof and designed to hang under the sleeping hammock (if there's room) and MollyMac's gear hammock, I decided to try a DIY. I bought two yards of water proof nylon that was about 60 inches wide. I used 60 inches for the length of the hammock and about 3.5 feet for the width of the body. The remaining width (2.5 ft of the two yards) is a top flap that covers the hammock and gear. I've used it twice and it's nice to be able to reach things at waist level instead of always digging into a pack or dry bag. So gear comes to camp in a backpack or dry bag but once it is pulled out, it goes into the gear hammock because I'll probably use it again. Cooking gear - pots/plates/cups go into a knitted nylon cord hammock. The only critter problem I've had were raccoons messing with stuff on the picnic table. At the end of the summer I started playing with a $5.00 battery powered Motion sensor light on the picnic table. If it doesn't encourage them to move, at least I'll be able to see what is making the ruckus. I may also put one near my hammock. It will make it easier to get in after that nightly walk an only illuminates for a minute or two. Have to aim it right so it doesn't disturb nearby campers.

I picked up a cheap $5 hammock at 5 Below. It's perfect for a gear hammock. Now if I can just find the time to get outside and hang.

I am new to the whole hammock camping, But I bought a second hammock that I can hang underneath me to put my pack and stuff in. I think I only paid $20 for the second hammock.

I "hang em high" above the ground in a mesh bag.
