DIY underquilt on hennessey clone question

I posted this under bottom insulation, but no replies, so I thought I'd try here.

I built a hennessey clone last summer with an integrated bugnet. It's great, and with double layer the pad hasn't been terrible, but I'm ready to grow up.

My son is almost five, so I'm also building a second hammock. This one is going to be a straightforward gathered end with ridgeline.

I want to build two synthetic UQs. One full length and one 3/4. I'd love for them to be interchangeable, so that I have flexibility. Can I get a good fit on an asym hennessey clone with a rectangular quilt, or do I really need to dart it and fit it for it to be effective?

    Thanks,

    John

I don't have any experience with an UQ and a Hennessey but I bet you can a make it work. The only thing that really makes it asymmetrical is the pullouts. Otherwise it is a rectangular body. I think a regular UQ will work just fine. That's my opinion, maybe someone else will chime in with some experience with a Hennessey and an UQ.

I am about to do the same thing so I have thought about this. I think the important thing is how you attach the UQ so that it can shift with you to be asymmetrical as we'll. My plan is to have relatively long suspension where the UQ can move on it.

If you are not using the Hennessy tie-outs, any underquilt will fit your hammocks just fine. It's the tie-outs that mess things up. Have a look at the JRB underquilt installation instructions for the Hennessy hammock: http://www.jacksrbetter.com/under-qu...-instructions/ - this should give you an idea on how to build your own underquilt.

It looks like as long as I add some asym tie-out loops I can make it work. I'm guessing that adjustment might be a little tricky, but I'll give it a whirl.

I replied to the other post. I've not had good success with rectangular quilts on Hennessy's. Adding tie out loops really doesn't help. I've had success cutting Poncho Liners to the pattern shown here:

should work with a synthetic bag.

ahh... hrm... I'll try making the 3/4 first and see how it goes. if it doesnt work maybe I'll just make a 3/4 for each.

    Thanks.

Moonshiner is a newbie and the last two trips he's been on with us. he had a Hennessey and EE 20* quilt and it worked just fine. I don't see the problem. As long as you adjust the quilt properly to snug up around the hammock, you shouldn't have any issues.
