3+ Season hammock sock w/ integrated tarp

I was inspired by Hangnout's latest creations and decided to make one of my own (until I can convince him to make me one from cuben! Those that have seen his work understand ...)

Anyway, I scored some Sil Argon a while back and was saving it for a project worthy of the material. Thanks Dutch!

As you can see from the pics, it has an integrated tarp and goes up in a flash. It has side netting that is 16 inches wide and 80% of the bottom is netting. It has a bottom entry via a slot constructed with overlapping netting.

Weight is 31 ounces total including the suspension and the integrated hammock.

Thanks again to Hangnout and Dutch for making it possible.

It should be...haven't tested it yet... since it is made of sil Argon I needed to ensure I had options to control condensation.

On cold winter days I plan to cover the netting on the bottom with a 1/8" thick pad (covered with a Tyvek sleeve) that I carry to sit on, etc when not in the hammock (double-duty). That leaves the sides to vent. When in the hammock with the bottom covered and an underquilt in place, the side windows vent above and below the hammock. Of course, I can reposition the pad to allow more air if needed.

On summer days, the floor will remain uncovered for max ventilation.

The tarp flaps can be raised or lowered based upon conditions.

This is not intended to be a deep-winter type sock; however, I may take it to the Roan Knob higher/colder hang later this year to see how it performs in those conditions.

The true purpose for this tarp is to provide an integrated solution that can be erected quickly after a long hike or in the hours of darkness with little fuss.

Awesome! I've often wondered what something like this might look like. Thanks for sharing.

Looks interesting! Thanks for the clear explanation. The Roan trip is quite a test for a new piece of gear. Good luck! Watch for condensation directly over your head. That's a good place for a vent if you can manage it without compromising rain protection.

    Nice work Grapenut!

Are you concerned that water will enter the sock from the exposed suspension?

KenDen, Good question...definitely something to make sure I am covered on! As long as I have a drip interrupter (my Hammock Anchor, Speed Hook, Chamois Rag Strip, etc) on my suspension outside of the entrance slit of the sock then I will be fine.
