continuous ridgeline: tarp goes over or under?

    hi all,

i recently got my first hammock and tarp; a warbonnet blackbird XLC and a superfly tarp. i put it up in the backyard a couple days ago and have been fine-tuning and learning the various methods of tying out the tarp, and i have one question (the first of many i think).

i made a continuous ridgeline with 1.75mm single braid dyneema, using a dutchware ridgeline carabiner attached to a prusik loop on one end, and a dutchware tarp fly attached directly to the ring in the end of the tarp at the other end. it works great for sliding the tarp back and forth to center it above the hammock.

at the moment, i have the tarp under the ridgleline, but i wondered if there are any advantages to running the tarp over the ridgeline. it seems like it would give me a bit more headroom when bending over to get under the tarp and into the hammock.

also, i just ordered a pole-mod kit from dutchware. i really like the idea of fewer guys to rig and trip over (i motorcycle camp so bulk / weight are not concerns). will the pole method work better with a ridgeline that goes over the tarp? or does it make no difference?

thanks in advance for your time and advice,

    -eric

Yep. Either method has its own merits. I go over. I feel like it gives a cleaner ridge and a tighter tarp. YMMV.

If you are going to use the pole mod then I would run your line above your tarp with your poles on top of your line. This will keep the poles from contacting the tarp and create a wear issue.

With the Superfly, you don't need a ridgeline. It is built in. Just attach to the metal loops on each end of the tarp. Then pull tight. Pole mod then goes over the tarp with ease.

hmm... i will have to take another look tomorrow. the reason i did the continuous ridgeline is so i could slide it back and forth easily to center it, but i will also play around with a dedicated mount on each end.

Another suggestion is to check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHuUmNOwBAw

WarBonnet's Brian does a good job of explaining how to set up the superfly.

Ridgeline under the tarp opens yp the possibility of water running down the line, and dripping.

I either do 2 independant lines or over the tarp.

The Superfly's ridgeline is catenary cut -- it curves upwards at the ends. Running the ridgeline over top of the tarp will keep it from interfering with the natural shape. Running it under the tarp will give it a bit more support, say in the snow, but does create the potential for drips following the line in the rain unless you tie up drip strings or something similar as a break.
