I don't think so especially with a WB tarp. He has a grosgrain ridgeline and your not going to wear through that. I use mine on a tarp without the grosgrain and is doesn't show any wear.

On my Superfly I already had a piece of shockcord between the panel pulls. When I ordered my Tarp poles from Dutch I also ordered some double ended mitten hooks too.
I tied them a few inches along the shock cord. A really good snap fit. They can be a bit fiddly to get back over the pole tips if you have cold fingers but I carry a few spares in case I snap one. I've been using them for a couple of months now and haven't snapped one.
Give it a try !
(I also have a couple of prussics on the ridgeline to keep the poles where I want them)
Edit: The image is from my first test, before the Prussics. With the Prussics fitted the poles sit above the panel pulls which makes the sides of the tarp more taut.

that's pretty cool. so is dutch's suggestion to tie three loops in a cord.
i just got mine today and made four continuous loops but i think i will switch out to shock cord. here's a not-too-detailed pic:

Spliced some up per Dutch's original description, and they work like a charm. Thanks Dutch!

i found another use for the poles. while they're deployed holding out the tarp sides, you can also peel your doors back (on my superfly anyway) and hook the plastic door triangles to the pole ends to hold the doors open.
