run down to the hardware/auto/walmart store and get a blue plastic tarp (<$10) and some string and gutter nails. the skills are the same.

Hey, great idea... Do you think camping stakes, the big ones that look like 10 penny nails would work? I have a ton of those for our different tents.
Definitely. If you aren't backpacking or trying to pack light for some other reason, standard car camping gear will work just fine. Some big ole plastic stakes, some rope, and a cheap tarp will keep you just as dry as some ultra-lightweight tarp and titanium stakes with high tech reflective dyneema guylines.
It just won't look as cool
Ahh.. yes. There's nothing like hangin' in the rain in the woods!
This being my first year as a hammock man, I, like Cannibal am looking forward to the winter and testing my cold weather gear.
There's no other group like hammock people. We're an unorthodox and quirky bunch, but we've got a truth like no others. Enlightened with a knowledge of a new way to enjoy the Great Outdoors!
I say, hang whenever possible and propagate the New Way!
Bessie Braddock: Sir, you are drunk.
Churchill: And you, madam, are ugly. But in the morning, I shall be sober.

Another day hanging in the rain. Got up at 6am and started getting ready to go climbing when I felt the first drops. Within a half hour it was steady and has been since. So instead of climbing I'm in my hammock, listening to the storms, posting to HF on my iPhone
The last time I went ground camping in the rain/sleet/snow, I woke up 3 inches of water (poor site selection). Good thing it was a synthetic bag. I was dreaming about snorkeling at the North Pole. We quickly hiked out before the granite iced over. Streams that we had jumped across on the way in were real challenges on the way out. Some folks took the helicopter to safety.
Conversely, waking up IN A HAMMOCK with raindrops on the tarp is delightful. I love the rain and how all those fresh negative ions make us feel so good.
My problem with rain is that it limits some of the hiking/climbing fun and clouds the view. Also, the fish seem less hungry.
