    HyperD 1.6 Hammock

Received my HyperD 1.6 Olive Drab from RSBTR yesterday. I have to admit I was very skeptical about the ability of this fabric to support heavier hangers with a single layer - boy, was I wrong! This material is everything people say it is - strong, lite, smooth and soft. It also drapes very well. After finishing the basic parts of the hammock - I still have to put on the bug net, tabs and hooks for the uq - I tried it out last night. I experienced very little stretch (I weigh 250) and a surprisingly flat lay.

I started with 8 yards of material. Kyle cut it pretty square so I didn't bother with squaring it anymore. I started with 145 inches long and right at 60 inches wide. The selvage wasn't bad so I just double roll hemmed the sides at 1/2 inch wide. I did a 3 roll channel at the ends at 1.5 inches wide. Finished dimensions are 131 inches long (gathered ends) and 58 inches wide. I have an adjustable ridgeline set at 109 inches (131 x .83 = 108.73 and I rounded up to 109. I'll be playing with it today to find the sweet spot and then attach the bug net.

I didn't have any problem with making straight hems with the diamond grid pattern in the material.

The only complaint I have is that the fabric drapes so easily that the floppy sides drove me nuts. I'll be doing the Knotty stretch side mod as the last thing. I like the olive drab color as it will match the tarp I'm making today (RSBTR SilPoly Olive Drab).

So - no more double layers for me or my friends and family.

Here's some pics - more will come later as I finish up everything.

    Fantastic!

Building one with the same material in black. It will be 10.5 feet long.

Thanks MDSH! My strength test is to bounce up and down really hard (not scientific, but very practical) to see what happens. This material survived easily.

I almost went with the black, but took a chance on the olive drab being a "real" olive color.

Great post. Your pics are almost a tutorial in themselves.

Thanks Tony - start to finish on just the hammock was less than 90 minutes. I still have to sew on the bug net, but was side tracked by the honey do list - non negotiable. Will finish asap. Working on a matching tarp made from SilPoly also.

Great job! I'd love to hear how you measured and applied the bug net to the zipper. Thanks!

Finishing up the hammock - added a zip bug net and side pull outs. Total weight - with 8 ft of 1/8" shock cord per side for pull outs and 6ft Whoopie slings on both ends for a total of 20 oz even. My new 10x12 tarp weighs 20.3 oz total. 40.3 oz for both is pretty good!
