i should mention that i will be using the top-quilt for ground sleeping on a pad in a tent, as well as in a hammock, if that makes any difference.

also, i toss and turn and fidget a lot.

anyway, thanks for all the replies so far. there seems to be opinion on both sides.

I have a JRB that has the snapped foot box and it is fine but I just purchased a new TQ from Hammock Gear and it will have a sewn foot box.

I have a TQ with snap up foot box. I have never used it unsnapped and it can lead to a few drafty areas if my foot pad gets off to the side a bit. I will not order another one without a sewn footbox. Only advantage to being able to open the quilt up would be if you intend to use it on your bed as a quilt or maybe to pull over you if ground dwelling.

I have 2 top quilts. My below 40* is fixed footbox and anything above 40* if have a snaps footbox. I usually don't snap the footbox closed when it is above 55*.

I started out with a sewn footbox and changed to a snap one for my 40* top quilt. Quilts below 40* I am staying with the sewn footbox. Even with the sewn footbox it is easy to vent and kick off if too hot. I do like the versatility of opening up the quilt when I go camping in my teardrop camper. I don't live too far from you if you ever want to see the difference in person let me know seeing how you are new to hammocking. I also have a netted and netless hammock if you want to see the difference.

Another good thing with the footbox is just getting situated when entering the hammock. I couldn't see doing that well if the quilt was completely open. I had a JRB years ago with a open footbox. It was held together with velcro. During the night I always kicked it open. The enclosed footbox also seems to have more room, more like a standard sleeping bag.

So now you've got me thinking about having my wife sew mine shut.
Are the commercial ones sewn so that if laid flat on the floor the foot would lay flat(seam parallel to the floor)? Or are they sewn so that the seam would stand up (perpendicular to the floor)?
It seems that it might make a difference in foot room depending of if you are a side sleeper or a back sleeper.

I don't know about the commercial ones because I don't own one. I sleep everywhich way but standing upside down and I sewed my footbox so it was parallel to the floor.
