    foot-box - sewn or adjustable?

    hi all,

has anybody gotten a top quilt with a sewn foot-box, and later wished they had opted for the type that can be opened (snaps or velcro)?

seems like the adjustable type would be better for temperatures on the high end of the quilt's rating, so you can kick your feet out or otherwise ventilate.

sewn type you are pretty much locked in, right?

    thanks,

    -eric

Nope. After a three years of using a poncho liner as my primary top insulation in temperatures ranging from 90* F to 20* F, I decided that I wanted a sewn footbox. I tied together my poncho liner's ties in the foot area to make a pseudofootbox, and I never really wanted to untie it regardless of temperatures.

Unless your footbox is so high up your waist that you can't get your foot out of it without getting out of the hammock (which kinda defeats one of the purposes of a topquilt in the first place), you can vent your legs pretty easy regardless of it being sewn.

    Hope it helps!

I'm in the same boat as the gator above me ...mostly

I have happily used the closure feather at the foot of some quilts on nights that were just too warm for the quilt's rating. But he's correct that it's easy to vent w/a "just long enough"seam on the bottom of the quilt.

I have never wanted to switch from my sewn footbox. If my feet are hot, I toss my feet out.

I have a snap topquilt and really like having the option to be able to lay it out completely flat and use it for other things beyond the hammock.

Eh. "Go local sports team and/or school!" Not a Gator. I just live here. My total emotional involvement in that rivalry is that burgundy and gold suck less than orange and blue.

No but I went the other way - from having a snap closure to sewing it shut.

Even when I use the TQ for sleeping not in my hammock, I'm happy to have the footbox built in. It's not like I'm using it for fashion purposes like a bedspread, I just want to sleep!

I figure having it sewn is one less thing to break which is why I chose to go with a sewn footbox. I didn't foresee ever wanting to lay it out flat

I have the Hudson River quilt from JRB that can be used as TQ or UQ and it has velcro for the foot box. I have used it multiple times in non hammock situation with the box open.

I like to able to open it up, primarily for faster drying, but also for my wearable JRB quilts (eg., Sierra Sniveller) to be worn as serapes.
