    Underquilt musings...

    I'm thinking about getting a new under quilt. I am looking for the lightest weight possible 20° UQ.
    So far I'm considering something like the HG Phoenix 20° with a .5oz Cuben Outer and Argon 67 Inner, kind of like the ZPacks quilt.
    I already have a HG UQ and I absolutely love it, but it just doesn't have the low end temp that I'm looking for.

    My thought is that the Cuben Outer would obviate the need for a UQ Protector while the Argon would allow any moisture that did manage to get into the down to dry. I know that HG made UQ's with Cuben in the past, but I believe that they used a Cuben Inner and Silnylon Outer.

    So what does Hammock Forums think?

    Thanks in advance for your advice, input, rants, etc.

    A hanging, though, was something different. I got to thinking. We hadn’t never been to nothing just to have a good time. A hanging was special and we was all getting to go.

    I'd skip the cuben outer unless you're trying to make a condensation trap. I wouldn't even recommend a UQP out of non-breathable fabric.

    Its an interesting theory.
    Ive seen zpacks quilts... and they are made with cuben.... and they don't trap condensation.
    The general concensus about UQ's and UQP is what silversurfer said though for sure.
    Sure would be cool if it worked.

    Im pretty sure i saw a review of a custom cuben UQ somewhere before from HG?

    I know that Stick had one. His was Cuben inner though.
    (Oops, should've checked your link first)

    Has anyone tried the ZPacks quilt? I really am not a fan of the suspension, but I wonder if the materials theory can be discussed.

    Apart from the ZPacks underquilts that would probably be the Enlightened Equipment Revolt Elite: http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/revolt-elite/

    45" = 13.43 oz
    55" = 15.46 oz
    65" = 17.48 oz
    75" = 19.5 oz

    I have a ZPacks sleeping bag filled with 900 FP down and it's great.

    Warbonnet 20 degree Yeti is 12.5 oz.

    True. The Yeti is 40" x 46" - the Revolt Elite is 45" x 45". I guess Tim could always make a custom Revolt Elite with 40" x 45", which should be even lighter than the Yeti, since the down has a higher fillpower and the fabric EE uses is lighter, too.

    This is one of those "know your body" things. If you can successfully use a vapor barrier as part of your sleep system, go ahead with the Cuben fiber on both sides, with fabric at the ends of the baffles. This will prevent condensation from getting into your quilt while still maintaining as light a weight as possible. If you can't, go with one of the 0.67 oz fabrics out there as your shell fabric the whole way 'round. M50 is definitely the most wind/water resistant of them.

    Hope it helps!

    I though condensation/vb was strictly a vertical game.. so with cuben on the bottom it's not much of a worry as the heat/vapor transmision is going away from that layer. Seems like cuben on the top layer would be an issue but cuben on the bottom would not. Am I just mixed up in my thoughts or understanding of condensation and cause thereof?
