For hammocks, it is nice if you can use a piece of shock cord to tether the pillow from the ridgeline, to prevent it from sliding down or falling to the ground, when you sit up or get in/out of the hammock. Most of the pillows above either have loops, or a label than can be used as a loop. Another option is to DIY a pillow case with attaching points.

The above list is just a small part of the camping pillow universe. A search in Amazon or any of the camping outfitters is sure to bring up many other models. And of course, it is an easy enough project to mod a pillow or cushion that you already have, or get some filling at a fabric store and make your own.

After many pillows purchased and tried I came to love the Therm-A-Rest Compressible for both ground camping and hammock. When using the mummy bag in the hammock it tucks in the hood and is always where my head is and it does pack down as small as a down pillow I had gotten at REI.

I do the same thing as grannypat, the only difference is that I use a cheap 50"x60" fleece throw folded up. In a pinch I can use it as an extra layer to keep warm.

I made a DIY out of ripstop nylon and stuffed it with down reaped from a pillow. I had bought a small travel-sized pillow for something like $2 from Walmart (found in the bedding dept not camping dept). It was lightweight and packed down small - but it wasn't big enough so it was basically useless. Watch out for lots of travel sized pillows since they're so small or so thin they won't get you your expected outcome. That is why I made a DIY. I overstuffed it so not only is it lightweight and packs down small - but it actually functions as a nice pillow as well.

I use a medium size Thermarest pillow. I opened it up and removed about 1/3 of the stuffing. It compresses down to an oversized softball. Still a little large for backpacking but it is very comfortable.

A small chunk of memory foam (about the sized of three golf balls) in a diy fleece bag. The lump of memory foam supports the neck while the remainder of the bag gives a fluffy soft feel without elevating the head too much.
I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.
