FL > Southern Florida, Gulf coast. Any good hang spots

    Dear southern Florida hammockers...

I may have a chance to visit southern Florida this winter and wondered if there were any good hammocking areas on or very near to the gulf coast ??

Don't mind primitive camping (actually prefer it if a good water source is nearby; but would prefer something close to the car. if possible.
Would not rule out campgrounds either but ones with fewer amenities are preferred.

...this would be more of a car-camping trip. Figured I'd walk the beaches for a change instead of hiking the woods.

    What say you?
PM me if you have a great spot(s) and would prefer fewer to know about such.

    Thanks!

I don't have much experience down in that area (I tend toward northern Florida), but a quick search of the Southwest Water Management recreation website might be in order. I've found that most of the water management lands that have campsites (at least here in northern FL) are either drive-up or a short hike in with a water source and generally not packed. They're also free to use, generally speaking.

    Hope it helps!

It's really too bad you're limited to car camping. Southwest Florida has some of the best camping I've ever experienced, but you need a kayak to get to the good spots.

My guess is you'd get mighty tired paddling that thing the 5-10 miles each way it takes to get to the good islands If you want to rent a sea kayak I can recommend a great outfitter in Naples.

Fl rider gave you a good hook up. Fisheating creek is supposed to be a great place to visit. It is on my list of places to visit. Olddog can give you some advice about there. There is a private campground down there and they have kayak rentals if you want to explore and camp primitive if you want to do some paddling.

I'll be more than glad to loan you a kayak for your trip! PM me and I'll meet you somewhere to deliver it! If you want to see some of this area, I'll skip out on work and we can hang!

    Yep, you nailed it WaffleBox!
Good reasons why sea kayaks and flatwater boats don't look like whitewater boats .

I'll PM ya for the Naples outfitter if that is on the docket..
    Thanks!

    Hey thanks richtorfla!
I'll try some google-fu on Fisheating Creek and maybe PM OldDog too.
Heard nothing but good news about paddling in Florida.

Say, is that pic in your profile the fabulous seafood boil from the 2012 FL hang? That's where I met most of you great folks (and ate and ate and ate...). What a blast! Annual January Florida Hang - highly recommended - oh Yeah!
