    Hello From an Ohio Scoutmaster

    Hello all!

I am a Scoutmaster from a Boy Scout Troop in Ohio. A friend of mine introduced me to hammock camping about a year and a half ago and I have been blessed with better sleeping ever since.

I originally purchased a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe Asym Zip and have camped with it many times starting in June 2013. This has been a fantastic set up, however I am getting ready to sell it because I have recently made my own gear. I'm planning a backpacking trip to Colorado next summer and wanted to save space and weight, so took the plunge and am making my own. I'll have to give all the details later when I get the time, but so far have made:

    • A hammock from Argon 1.6 with Amsteel Woopie Slings
    • A tarp from 1.1 oz sil-nylon
    • Turtle Dog stands so that I can hang no matter where we camp.

So far I am around 28 oz. I plan to add mosquito net, some stuff sacks, sil-nylon snake skins for my tarp, and a sil-nylon poncho. I have also purchased a Hammock Gear Incubator 20 under quilt and a 20 degree Flight Jacket (55" xx 84") top quilt from Underground Quilts. I used my DIY set up with the 20 degree quilts and turtle dog stands a few weeks ago and was warm enough on a night that got down to 12 degrees. It was about 20 when we went to bed, dropped as low as 12, and was 16 when we got up in the morning. I had on some Pardox Merino Blend Base Layer top and bottoms from Costco and a nice hat that came with my Flightjacket order. My feet were the only thing that were cold, but they were cold when I went to bed and I just never got them warmed up. The second night it only got to about 22 degrees and I was toasty warm.

I have attached a picture of my setup that first morning. I do plan to give much more detail with kudos to everyone here on hammockforums where I got my designs.

Welcome! And good job on the DIY setup!

You're fortunate to have been infected with the DIY variant of Gear Addiction Disease. The retail variant is far more expensive.
