Down or synthetic hoods for quilts?

    My very first thread

Anyway, greetings, hangers. I have a simple question for those who use separate hoods with their top quilts to keep warm:

Do you use down or synthetic hoods?

My obvious choice was to get a down hood sometime next week during a Black Friday sale but I started thinking about the moisture resistant benefits of a synthetic hood. Especially considering that you wear it on your head and if you ever need the extra warmth while walking in the rain or snow it would get extra wet.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Thanks!

A Black Rock beanie. It's down and has a lot of R/D and trail miles on them. Shug has plenty of vids with them and uses 2 at the same time when really cold.

Synthetic is bulky for the same temp rating as down. Shouldn't be too much for a hat, though.

Thanks for the quick feedback! However, I'm actually looking for something that would cover a bit more of the neck and mouth. I tend to toss around a lot so if I tuck my head inside of my quilt, I always pop out of it in the middle of the night and wake up to a really sore throat from breathing in cold air.

That down beanie does look pretty cool though. Might just pick one up to replace my fleece one...

Have you thought about a balaclava? Those could be multipurpose pieces. I've seen some that can be used as a neck warmer, pull over head with face exposed, cover head only eyes exposed and pulled up as a beanie.

I should have gotten it, now that you made me remember it. Darn.

I have a balaclava already but it was too thin for me to stay warm. I actually just decided on getting the Enlightened Equipment Hoodlum. I figured since my face can get pretty oily and dirty from a full days worth of hiking that the Climashield Apex will loft better with all my grime on it

JRB and Zpacks both have down hoods. JRB hood on sale.

Pertex Waterproof breathable fabric for the outer shell.
This gives you the ability to leave it on in light snow and rain.
    Combined with 800FP down-tek water-resistant down you've got one storm-worthy down hood.

No disrespect to JRB; they make great gear but I'm not sure if I'm ready to go out looking like Toad from Mario even if it is in the wilderness. Standalone hoods are terrible fashion statements enough...

That Pertex looks tempting but knowing how disgusting my face gets after a hike, I don't know if I'd want to desecrate that fine 800fp down with my oily goodness. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards synthetic.

This forum is awesome, by the way. So much information given so quickly.

None taken. I pretty sure, no I'm absolutely sure JRB has had that comment before.

Luke's Ultralite. I'll sooner or later order the entire set, vest, sleeves, hood. There are other, and cheaper options, but none of them are going to fit or perform better, than Luke's stuff. You may not need the best all the time, but I do like to go there on garments, or insulation. This fits both catagories IMO.
