    suggestions for a shorter hammock?

My son is needing a new hammock. He's been using a BIAS camper (11') in his room but we are moving and he has a smaller room now. Looking for a good quality hammock that he can also use for camping as well. He is 13 and around 5'4". I am thinking something around 9' would be fine for him. Suggestions?

GT Ultralight or Nano would work. Alternatively you could build one relatively easily.

At 5'4" I am good from 9 to 10 feet in length. That leaves a ton of options open then on types of hammocks. I have had good luck with Jared over at Simply Light Designs but honestly think you could find many cottage here vendors willing to work with you as well as DIY. I personally need a wider angle with more fabric width for the angle of my lay but YMMV. . .

Hmmm....thanks! I will check those guys out. I would definitely like to support our cottage vendors and do! Just weighing my options and seeing what might be available for him. Also considering a DIY as well. I have a buddy that made his own recently and turned out really nice. He said that he would give me hand if I decided to make one. I believe he made his out of ripstop. Would that material be a good one for someone that is sleeping in it every night? Is is comfortable?

I would check out the Streamliner of SLD. You have the option of going 9'.

However, have you tried hanging the 11' hammock with more sag to fit the room? In my experience, the longer the hammock, the more sag it can have. All shorter hammocks I have tried need to be hung with a lot less sag.

Sure. Ripstop works. Although some ripstop fabrics are nicer than others. I really like the feel of 1.6oz Argon, but it's too stretchy for me. I'm going to make a double layer some day and see if that fixes things. 1.6oz HyperD feels super nice, too. Since my sewing machine broke, I haven't been able to finish my HyperD hammock, yet - so can't say what kind of lay it gives.

I know Eno's hammocks are around 9'4" long which would work, a lot of ultralight options from companies are smaller than standard models

This is not an uncommon problem; it is ripe for experimentation.

I would consider one of the many 10ft x 60ish hammocks that are available. I'm 5'7" and I use this size hammock for my indoor sleeper. The photo below shows my bedroom hammock hanging in a span of 102" wide.

Have you considered the fact that your short guy, is going to undergo an amazing change very shortly. My middle child grew so fast during her 13th year, I could not keep her in shoes, she went from being average height for a 12 year old into being 73 inches tall in about a year, just shot up like a Sunflower, I felt like I could see how she had grown over the night! Her growth was totally unexpected, I am short, her dad was average height as was her older brother.

So beware, 13 year old children frequently sprout, I would take that fact into consideration while deciding on an appropriate hammock, your son might not find it comfortable to sleep with his feet hanging out of the hammock.
