what lenght tree straps with speed hooks

Ok I have my speed hooks and Adutchable clips and have been playing with them
I have saved zero in weight from my other set I was using.
whoopie sling, 12' tree strap and a dutch buckle was 4.25 oz per side
speed hook, 10' amsteel lead, 12' tree strap with Adutchable clip is still 4.25 oz per side

dont think I need 12' tree straps with the 10' tree straps but what length do I cut them down too.
If I take 5' off and keep them at 7' then I save 1.25 oz per side.
I'm not a gram weinie but weight is weight and if I dont need it why carry it.

I'm figuring that if tree is larger than what strap will cover I can just put amsteel at Adutchable clip correct?

Many people that use a combination of tree straps and amsteel carry straps that are between 6 to 8 feet. That should be enough for most tree set ups. 12 to 15 feet is what I see most people use for their total suspension length per side.

The answer is dependent on your trees and where you camp.

I use 6' straps and my lead is 4.5' because I used a 6' sling to open up and cut in half. Then I made 2 sets of continuous loops and a lead with each half of the Whoopie Sling. This effectively cut my Amsteel weight and bulk in half since I don't need the other Whoopie Sling.

I also removed the weight of the toggles (Speed Hooks weigh less) and the weight of the carabiners to use ADutchable clips. My weight and bulk have gone down even without the clips being used, but, because of them, more so.

The only constant has been the straps. I have always used the same 6' straps.

My max distance has been reduced by 3' total (only maxed out once ever by choice) and my min distance has been reduced by 1.5' total. I could always make 6' leads with extremely little weight and bulk penalty, but, I like to reuse and repurpose what I have.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I've been using 4 ft. tree huggers for several years. They work great here on the East Coast because none of the trees are more than 100 years old because of all the clear-cutting last century. When I see an old growth tree, which is rare, I'm just in awe.

I use one 4' and one 6' tree strap. But it's totally dependent on the typical size of trees you have in your area. In addition, I carry two sections of 6' line with Speed Hooks. I also carry a 4' long dogbone line to extend the system, but have used it only twice. I do have very small continuous loops on my hammock ends. Since I use Dynaglide, my suspension is featherweight.

I am going to start using 4' I believe. If you forward to the 11:50 mark you can see what 6' look like on a "normal" sized tree where I typically hike. I am also using 6' leads.

I am heading back out this weekend for 3 days and hope to experiment a bit more.

I carry considerably shorter dogbones or continuous loops as tree strap extenders - maybe a foot or so. I can always larkshead a couple together if necessary.

I can see that working. The whole idea is brilliant in my eyes. Wouldn't have thought of it.

My set-up is almost the same as SilvrSurfr - East Coast here too:
6 ft tree straps, 6 ft Amsteel leads, and assorted Amsteel loops to extend if needed.
To shorten - just make extra wraps with the tree straps.
Dutch clips for the tree straps and Speed Hooks makes this simple and quick (and this suspension is always attached to the hammock)
