IAT Kettle Moraine North Solo Hike

    Hey everyone!

Just finished my first big jaunt of the Ice Age Trail through the Kettle Moraine State Forest. I managed 31.6 miles over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this past week.

Day one: Started at HWY H at about 9:30 and hiked 13 miles to shelter #3 (Dundee shelter). Got into camp about 5:00pm and rushed my setup and dinner due to a pretty sore left knee and got to bed early. High temp was around 30, and the low was about 20.

Day two: Got off to an early start to knock out the next 10 mile segment to shelter #5 (Greenbush shelter). Knee felt better after plugging a few aspirin before hitting the trail. Took my time and made it with plenty of light in the day to spare. I put a little more effort into my setup and this time made myself a fire to cook from rather than use my beer can stove. Temperatures were about the same as the previous night.

Day three: Took my sweet time, mostly for the sake of my bad knee, to finish up the last few miles to the trailhead at HWY P. There I was relaxing and a couple and their pups came around. The gentleman was kind enough to drive me over to Fudgieknuckles; a bar in Glenbeulah about a mile down the road. There I waited for my ride to pick me up and had a well deserved victory beer and a fish fry to boot.

Overall it was a great trip. It was quite the challenge for me as I'm not in the best of shape. It was definitely nice to get out and away from work and life's daily responsibilities.

I actually have some gopro footage of the first couple days as I ran out of card space Friday morning. Mind you I had rationed my battery very well but did not anticipate my card space to fill up so quick... I may make a video but it would be a little inconclusive. When I get some time I may at least post some extracted still images.

It's not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body,
But rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting,
    Woo Hoo!....What a Ride!

This will be my first winter hammock camping as well! I too enjoy checking out how other people do this. This setup works nice. I've got the ENO double nest which is a good amount of material for me to lay diagonally and get flat (the static whoopie ridge line is essential for this). The HG underquilt is worth every penny. I just used a borrowed 0 sleeping bag for a top quilt... Which unfortunately took up most of my 75L pack and weighs a whopping 6lb... Ugh.

It was great weather!!! Perfect temps for being on the move and I had beautiful light flurries throughout the trip.

The trail isn't the easiest but it is impressive! I think next time I hike a similar trail I will take a little more time to take in the camp and the great views. This trip, as great as it was, was a lot of work (for me) to hike.
