I took a measured piece that was exactly 2 SY and weighed it. It came out at 6.02 oz! It is significantly heavier than 1.9 oz. I also did a burn test and based on those results I think this stuff is urethane coated polyester ripstop.
I am using it for waterproof stuff sacks, jerry chairs and will be making a tarp. The tarp will be a diamond shaped fly to keep the size and weight down. So far I have bought almost 20 yds of the stuff! Even at this weight it's a deal at $1.50/yd.
Has anyone else weighed a measured peice to confirm my results.
Do you need to treat this with anything to make it waterproof or is it good as is to use as a tarp?
The stuff I have is 100% waterproof off the shelf. It passes the blow test as well. Make your tarp and seal the seams. I used a urethane based Seam Grip for my diy tarp I made from this.

Thanks GvilleDave. Is this the stuff that isn't ripstop but is 100% nylon? I think this is what I found on the Hancock website for 2 bucks a yard, I looked at it at the store yesterday, not ripstop but it passed the breath test. I'm going to see if I can get the store to match it so I don't have to pay shipping.
I'm OK with the weight, just want the tarp to be water proof.
From what I can tell - incl. advise I got here at HF and a burn test I did on the fabric, I believe this is urethane coated polyester ripstop. It is definately ripstop & I am sure the waterproof coating is not silicon. Other than the fact the fabric weighs 3 oz / sy I think it's great. I made my tarp a small diamond so the weight would still be ok. If you car camp this would be just the ticket for a big tarp. It's strong and very waterproof so far for me.
