I believe it's the Avery or Yancey County areas that would apply. The current report indicates snow and ice on secondary roads there.

Temps won't be warm enough for salt or brine to help with the exception of a few hours between now and Friday. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday will have more ice and snow. The snow wouldn't trouble me nearly as much as the ice. Those looking to arrive later on Friday will have more to deal with than those planning on arriving earlier. Then again, it looks like snow and sleet falling on the way out.

Sorry been out of the country (Montreal), seems I brought bad weather back....just now getting oriented to space and time.
Storm seems over, surely DOT is on the job.

Welcome back. I'm sure you had fewer mosquitoes to ward off than me lately.

I think DOT is busy with the primary roads for now. Knoxville still has close to 20k without power and may get more frozen precipitation tonight.

Some snow might help. Ice just keeps refreezing if it doesn't evaporate.

I'm curious to see how much new stuff gets deposited between now and Friday. With the temperature where it is, the ice won't be going anywhere.

Thank you for the information, I don't mind the snow either and as long as the ice is in small patches that isn't too bad either. According to map quest, it's closer for me to take 421 to Boone then down to Linville and over to Roan Mountain and go through the park and up that way. I think I will go that route and monitor the road conditions.

Yeah. The problem with this one is that it was mostly ice. That's what knocked out the power in so many places. In the mean time, just wait and see what has ice remaining and what the mix is for Friday.

Just a quick update on current conditions. Temp 8 degrees at 10 pm and windy. I had the day off so did a short hike at this elevation (3000 feet) and it was beautiful but miserable in the wind. The kind where you have to walk backward to save your eyes. I am worried about Black Wolf, he has to be uncomfortable in these conditions.

I can not see the road to Carver's gap being open as we had 4-6 inches of snow today and the high temp tomorrow will be around 0 degrees. We will see.

Anyway, I prefer to have my testicles on the outside of my body so may not join you guys Friday evening, we will see. If things turn south on Friday, and you guys need a place to hang, feel free to come to my farm and head out Saturday AM. I have plenty of trees and dry wood. Indoor plumbing will be 100 yards away.

Call me a pussy. Sticks and stones....

Tomorrow would certainly be a bit on the challenging side. My guess is that the top might be getting around the negative 20's. With the windchill, it could possibly in around negative 50. Friday does look warmer, but if the road up there is iced over and you don't have a four wheel drive with a complete set of chains it's a moot point.

I share your concern for Black Wolf. It's one thing to do a one night test of wills and beat a hasty retreat down the mountain to a warm room with hot food. It's another to endure a 20 below night and get up to hike 10 or 15 miles in temps below 10 all day.
