MN > Twin Cities > Afton Overnight Thread

As a touring cyclist, I was introduced to the concept of the S24O (Sub 24 hour overnight). So much more possible (and frequent) than the epic bike tour or complete thru-hike. I've come to really enjoy my quick trips.

It seems like Minnesota has a good share of hangers...and many of us are in the Twin Cities area. I've spoken with several other forum members about doing some quick overnights at Afton State Park - especially to test out cold weather gear.

I figured it might be helpful to have a "subscribe-able" thread to which anyone interested could participate or post up last minute trips. I hope to find a night later this month to mess about with my new pulk and my winter kit.

    I'll bring the bacon.

Hey Gravity I too am quite obsessed with the "S24O" (I never heard it called that, is that actually a term used by other outdoorsman or did you just make it up? I like it). I would much rather go on 5 separate overnight trips spread out over a couple months VERSUS wait a couple months to do one 5 day trip. I go crazy if I don't sleep out in the wilderness at least once a month! Plus it is way easier for me to convince my wife to let me go on a trip if she doesn't have to be alone for more than a day

AND! Like you I think the bicycle is a key component to this type of camping. I race road, cross, and MTB but have been on a hiatus lately because I had to care of so many injured cyclists this summer that I am terrified to ride on the road! Haha. Ride safely out there! It doesn't matter that we have the right to ride on the road, car drivers are still idiots! If I could go back in time and un-invent texting I would.

Either way I am definitely interested. VinceTheButcher is another guy who you should be in contact with but he started a bike tour across America and no one has heard from him so hopefully he is ok! Have you ever travelled out west of the cities? There are so many awesome parks and stealth camping spots on this side and many of the valley roads are even bigger than Afton.

I've thought about hitten the river bottoms on many occasions! I mtb down there and hike it a lot considering I live in Eagan it's either there or lebenon but alas you can't hang lebenon. But to be honest I didn't think you could spend the night down there. Have you ever "Hung" out in the River bottoms?

Have hiked and hung the section from Belle Plain to Shakopee a number of times, both summer ,fall and winter, but this will be the first winter to bike and hang.

This is a great idea. With kids activities, all I have is one night opportunities.
