    2QZQ underguilt protector

I tried out a breathable nylon protector that I got from 2QZQ. I chose this material to reduce the potential of condensation.

In making this selection, I had been very pleased with Donna's correspondence as well with her protector when I received it. I liked what I saw.

I was doubly curious about how it would work after looking at Shug's Art Loeb video.

I don't have my underquilt yet but this weekend I tried the protector in my backyard during two cool windy nights using my CCF pads. Wind gusted Saturday night to the 20 mph range. I purposedly used my mosquito net instead of my WWB top cover because I wanted to understand the dynamics of the protector.

I've slept with this exposure and wind before and would feel the gusts on my shoulders. It was tolerable but not comfortable.

That said, Saturday and Sunday nights when I pulled the protector up a bit on my shoulders, all was good! The protector acted as a very effective wind blocker. Cool. I really like that capability.

I think the protector will be a pretty handy tool.

Great news. I have had one for about a year and have had similar success with mine.

I should get my UQ within a week, in time for some cooler weather. I'll try out the UQ by itself and then add the protector to the mix. Pretty sure the protector will be a permanent addition to my equipment.

Donna does good work at 2QZQ. She even sent me a head's up that my quilt was waiting for me in the post office. We'd had to leave on vacation before I could pick it up. She was concerned that I had not gotten it. Nice of her.

I'm having trouble deciding which material to order for my 2QZQ UQP. I'm leaning towards a breathable material to prevent any moisture issues in multiple environments, but I'm not sure how water resistant it'll be. Any inputs from our seasoned hangers?

Full-Time Hanger here (even last winter).

I tried out this product. Was excited at the prospect of this plus an overcover simulating the beneficial effects of a full hammock sock.

What I found is as follows:

    - The combo of 2QZQ undercover plus an overcover probably simulates well the experience of being in a full hammock sock UNLESS there are high winds and/or blowing snow.
    - When there were high winds, I found that the very small diameter elastic cords in the undercover were inadequate to resist those winds. So not only did the wind get to my underquilt, but blowing snow actually got into the undercover AND even between the underquilt and the hammock (!!). Neither would happen with a true hammock sock.

I currently live in a tropical climate and the temp never gets below 40. Currently, I'm more concerned with keeping my synthetic UQ dry when it's windy and rainy out. I was looking at the breathable material because I was concerned with the humidity causing moisture to develop between the UQ protector and the quilt. But since I'm using synthetic filling in my arrowhead jar bridge, I'm wondering if that will be much of an issue versus goose down filling.

I've used my breathable nylon protector three nights now in temperatures ranging from 42 to 38. Will again tonight.

One of those nights winds averaged about 15 mph with gusts to 20. I had been cool in the shoulders without the underprotector a week before but not the night with the wind. Best way I can describe it is how my single layer nylon windbreaker jacket works in wind. It complements my mid layer clothing. Just like I experienced hanging. I'm betting it will offer helpful moisture protection as well.

Altruist Guy, I'm very curious as I am looking at a similar set up - under quilt, UQP, and superfly for winter; did you get snow in the under quilt and UQP with the superfly in door mode?

    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.
