I've never hammocked. I'm about to buy some stuff.

Like the title says, I've never used a hammock before. I'm about to pull the trigger on a rather large order, and was wondering what you guys think. Is there something I should get instead, or something that I am missing? I live in Hawaii so shipping is pretty expensive, so I would like to get everything I need in one order, especially the smaller things (like buckles/ropes/carbiners etc).

    Some basic info about me:

    5'-8"
    140lbs
    EDIT: Side/stomach sleeper

I'm planning on thru-hiking the PCT next year.

Here is what I'm about to order:

Warbonnet Blackbird 1.1 DL w/ Whoopies EDIT: Or should I go with the XLC for the extra foot?
    Edge Tarp
    Yeti UQ
    EDIT: Tarp Guyline
    EDIT: Y-Shape Stakes

I have an overquilt. Is there anything I am missing that will prevent me from hanging this hammock with a tarp strait out of the box?

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

    Thanks!

Sounds like a good start. I am sure you got stakes and line for your tarp.

No problem and also for that Warbonnet 1.1 you can use two stakes for the hammock. One for the little shelf in the netting and one for the other side of the net.

So I would need six stakes altogether? Two for the hammock and four for the tarp?

Also, forgot to mention that I am a side/stomach sleeper, don't know if that makes a difference.

Thanks Gravity. I figured since Warbonnet has a two month return policy I would just buy all the stuff at once to save on shipping, and return if it doesn't work.

EDIT: Actually you're right, I'm just gonna order the Blackbird to see how it goes. If that doesn't work, I will return and order the XLC.

That is correct. I usually keep a few extra stakes in my pack in case I misplace one. You can do some side sleeping, but stomach I don't know about that. Unless you have a lot of flexibility.

The PCT isn't known as the most hammock-friendly long distance trail. Do you have a plan for when you might want or need to sleep on the ground? That contingency is the main thing I see missing from your sleeping system.

I'm not sure if anyone manages to sleep comfortably on their stomach in a Blackbird. Chances are that won't work out very well. Back is easiest to manage, followed by side. Stomach would be a very distant third.

    Agreed about no stomach sleeping.
Agreed stick with the Blackbird. For your height, you don't need the extra foot...and weight to carry.
You dont need a double layer if you are using an underquilt. The double layer is good to use with a pad or to add strength. Based on your weight, a single layer is fine. Also saves you from carrying extra weight.

    Of course, these are opinions.
