You ma find you are a more versatile sleeper than you think. I was always a side and stomach sleeper, I had a health issue that required surgery and was directed by the doc to side sleep only and stretch out fully during recovery. From then on I slept like a plank on my side, that was almost 20 years ago. A few years ago I picked up hammock camping, I can sleep on my back without stirring for 6 - 12 hours depending on fluid intake. Nonetheless I do find the need to stretch out on m side some nights. I've slept full time 2 years and part time for 3. I would recommend a tablecloth to start, at your height you might find you don't need an 11' hammock, my go to hiking hammock is 10' Simply Light Designs Streamliner, I use a bottom entry separate bug net, I found that I preferred that simple and easy method after buying 2 hammocks with zippered bug nets. There are a bunch of folks who use both, and it's really just personal preference IMO. As others have said I wouldn't count on much stomach sleeping, in a gathered end hammock, but you might try bridge hammocks if you gotta sleep on your stomach. Again spend a week or 2 in a table cloth to see how you deal with the hammock night after night. Also try a group hang if you can before you purchase, there are a great number of hammocks and methods out there and seeing 1st hand is advisable, if there are group hangs in Hawaii.

Thanks for the advice guys. Is there any advantage to using a DL if I wouldn't be using a pad? I thought I read something about it being good for mosquitoes.

Thought about getting the Ridgeline instead of the Blackbird, just so I could sleep on my stomach. It just seems like the Blackbird is recommended most often around here. Weight is a pretty big concern for me, as is ease of setup/takedown.

For your height and weight, and if using an UQ, I would go with the single layer if you are concerned about weight. I have heard that mosquitoes can not bite through double layer, but you can also treat your gear with permethrin or other products.

Also, if using and UQ, they will have a hard time getting to you anyway.

I had a RR. About the only way you can sleep on your stomach is to use it with a nice thick and wide pad and blow the pad up real tight. Even then, you'll have some bend in the middle. I couldn't make it work. Might be a little different with the JRB bridge hammock.

Keep in mind that the hammock is completely different than your bed. You have no idea what kind of sleeper you are right now. You'll probably end up like the rest of us, on your back. But habit will make you want to turn onto your side. Just realize that's what it is, habit. Turn on your side for a bit to satisfy yourself, go back to sleep, and wake up on your back. Hey, I ought to know, I'm a stomach sleeper at home, too.

That's why I got rid of the RR... I'd turn onto my side and my knees hit the rigid sides, making it uncomfortable to get back to sleep. Mostly due to using a thick pad, but that's why I got the heavier RR to begin with, to use the pad.

As for which BB, reg vs XLC, your size is a good fit for the regular whereas any benefit from the XLC is probably outweighed by the greater width needed between trees (and additional cost).

Thumbs up to this - I'm a hard-core side-sleeper in a bed, sometimes stomach sleeper. In a hammock, I sleep on my back. I do occasionally roll on my side but it doesn't feel good.

Be sure to check out the journals by Slowbro and RamblingHemlock if you haven't already. Both PCTers and hammockers in '14.

Here's the links to Rambling Hemlocks and Slowbros sites. I've followed Joan's blog for a few years and it's a great read with lots of good info.

Don't switch your hammock, switch your hike! The AT will welcome you and wrap its woodsy arms around both you and your hammock. Plus it's easy to find water there. And stores for resupply. And people to talk to and break bread with on the trail!
