Primaloft Silver and Gold now available @ RBTR

Very proud to announce that after a couple months work, we are now of the few shops offering Primaloft to the DIY community. If you're looking for a down alternative and willing to do some quilting, Primaloft is an excellent high-performance synthetic. In terms of clo rating on synthetics, it just doesn't get better than Primaloft Gold @ 0.92.

We currently have both Primaloft Silver 6 oz/yd2 and Primaloft Gold 3 oz/yd2 up on the site and available immediately.

    Silver - http://ripstopbytheroll.com/products...ft-silver-6-oz
    Gold - http://ripstopbytheroll.com/products...old-3-oz-sq-yd

Aside from buying warmth and happiness, your Primaloft purchase will also allow me to use my basement again. Thank YOU

Wow, the CS at .82 CLO was, in my experience getting a lot closer to down for warmth to weight ratio, considering 2.5 oz total insulation has kept me warm into the 40s in a short UQ. But CLO .92? Impressive! And very water resistant also, no doubt! Of course, you may have to add(I guess?) some quilting or something that would increase the total weight, but still the CLO just keeps marching onward!

Well the temp rating is going to depend on a lot of different things - materials, construction, volume into which you're putting the insulation, etc. However, from talking to different gear makers I have heard that on average 6 oz/yd2 of Primaloft Gold would create something in the neighborhood of a 40-50 deg quilt/bag.

I'm just starting to play around with this stuff as well, so we can learn together. It does come with a scrim on one side, which is basically a thin layer of material that holds everything together. You can leave the scrim on and relax the quilting requirements albeit with added weight, or you can remove it, save weight, and follow the quilting guidelines to avoid clumping and migration. The raw performance of Primaloft is excellent, but it is more difficult to work with than a high-end continuous filament synthetic like Climashield (no quilting required). You're just trading performance and ease of use between the two.

I'll try to post more info on use and such as I come across it. I also have dreams of making a jacket, so I'm sure there will be lessons learned that come out of that.

Hi BB, this sounds like pretty cool stuff. Could you help a newbie out? What does "CS at .82 CLO and CLO .92" mean or stand for?
If others know the answer feel free BB may mis this question.

    thanks,

I assume he means CS (ClimaShield) has a CLO rating of .82 ... and that was getting close to the down stats. But, this new Primaloft has a CLO of .92 ... which basically means better warmth to weight and compressability ratio. The real trade off being, CS is easier to work with and need NO quilting. Where as Primaloft requires some quilting for peak performance.

Kyle, can you get access to the technical and/or install sheets? They are not around to the general public as far as I know. The Gold is good enough to start looking at versus climashield. Specifically, quilting requirements...

    Really my question is,
Can you simply sew parallel rows of stitching 6" o.c.? Or does it have to be a box pattern like on the patagonia nano puff?

If you could do parallels and put the rows about 5.75" oc then you wouldn't loose much loft to the quilting. Despite the raw Clo numbers, after all the quilting I can't imagine you are doing better any longer with the gold.

    Generally, my understanding;
Primaloft is for clothing. It drapes better, has more uniform thickness ( climashield can have large swings in thickness), the extra quilting requirements don't matter much in clothes. The attached scrim makes it easier in some applications.
Worth noteing, the patagonia clothes put the quilted piece to the outside. The liner is unsewn.

Apex is easier, and after quilting the primaloft, probably the same warmth.

    Thanks JB.

The clo has the same units as the R value used to describe insulation used in residential and commercial construction. The clo value is also similar in magnitude to the R value. -wiki
