    Stitching advice for webbing

I have a heavy duty Singer sewing machine from 1946, and it only sews straight stitches. Also, the variable speed control it pretty touchy, and it is difficult to stitch slowly. This photo is of 1" webbing that I sewed a loop in for my hammock suspension. The stitching isn't pretty, but I just want it to be functional.

Would you trust this stitching for your suspension?

I've seen worse. While not particularly pretty, I'm sure you will be fine assuming you don't hang higher than you're willing to fall. It's hard to tell in the photo, but I think I see a basic x inside a box, with "a little extra" thrown in for good measure. I say go for it. Webbing is pretty cheap. If this one makes you nervous, keep practicing.

EDIT: After closer inspection, I think I can make out an "X", but I'm not sure I see a box. If you're up for it, I'd probably throw a simple box around the perimeter of what you've already done and call it a day.

What it really comes down to is number of stitches x friction coefficient x thread strength. The friction coefficient is widely variable, but 110-125% seems to be a safe bet. If you're using Mara 70 the break strength is about 3.5 lb. You have the right idea though. When you don't have zig-zag, lots of stitches. Unless you're a pretty big guy it'll probably work. As with everything, just keep an eye on it for signs of failure and replace it before it does.

I'd use more length - something like 4-5" for a suspension loop of stitching. Lots of straight rows of stitching are as strong as box patterns, just not so good-looking.
For me the question isn't whether it will hold when it's freshly made (yours will, I bet) but how it will perform after it's gotten used and abused a bit.

    I'd give it a hang.

If you're having trouble with the speed controller (assuming the machine is oiled and running freely), I suggest getting this controller and select the correct cord here. They will also wire it for you if you like.

Edit: Oh Yeah....and send me your old controller as I can use the spare parts.

Agreed. I've read to use a stitch pattern 3 times longer than the webbing width, so 3" for 1" webbing.

You could always do a zig zag pattern, not zig zag stitch but pattern. I've read that that is stronger than any of the other patterns anyway. Just do a zig zag a couple of inches long parallel with the webbing.

It looks like mine and it hasn't let me down yet. My stitch lines are 2 " long.

Looks fine and honestly, the randomness of the pattern has probably increased it's strength.

Sadly, this is supposed to be a zig-zag pattern. It was an attempt to make three rows of zig-zags. The machine moves so fast that it got kind of messy, but I figured it would still serve the same purpose. It wasn't until I finished that I realized that I didn't have as many stitches as I thought I did in all of the rows.
