Sounds like the Shawnee National Forest would be right on your way. They would have dispersed camping. I looked at State Parks, etc., in Western Kentucky but didn't see anything that would work....

Valley of Fire State Park is Beautiful!! it's about an hour's drive, I think, but well worth it.
There is also the Red Rock Canyon Conservation area west of the city.
