5 days up the Appalachian Trail from NY to CT. Tested out my DIY Monolite hammock and was very pleased -- think I found my new warm camping hammock....
I'm around 190lbs and bring my 70lb pittie into my Hexon 1.6 in the colder months. No holes yet, but I do like the dog socks idea!
When it's warmer/wet out, he sleeps under me in his own UQ Pooch...
Welcome! My first hammock was also an Eno...then I found this forum along with Dutchware and Ripstopbytheroll and entered the never-ending world of DIYing. Live in the Bronx so I hang in Harriman...
Looks interesting and very efficient I imagine once it's set up.
I always have a no-seeum ridgeline organizer for my phone/hat/book/pen, etc. I hang mine with prussik knots, but I also like to keep a few other prussik knots on the ridgeline for anything else I...
10 for 10 in Harriman State Park last night! Plus, I did something I never thought I'd do--went to ground intentionally! I had a nice spot set up to hang, but another spot nearby was just too nice....
I'm with you on needing a pretty flat lay and liking to sleep on my side/stomach. What works best for me is a wide hammock (70"+) and/or a very lightly inflated inflatable pad. The pad really does...
A big table, a metal ruler, and rotary cutter is how I do it.

Got April done last night. 8 for 8 and also visited the last of the 9 shelters in Harriman State Park, Stone Memorial. Unfortunately, it was the filthiest shelter I've been to in the park (and I'm...
Good point. A friend and I like to keep track of our mental "lows" and "highs" throughout a hike. They're different every time.

If breaking off firewood with your foot, watch the other end of the log. 7 stitches in my forehead taught me that.

Welcome! I'm 5'9", 180#, and have found that 10'6"-11' hammocks work best for me because they allow for more sleeping positions. The new wide fabrics that are available also make a difference.
I...
Ohh, OK. I didn't know about that. Thanks.

I thought vapor barriers were supposed to go inside the bag. Doesn't this just trap the condensation in the sleeping bag?

Lounge, breakfast, lounge some more, pack out. My hammock is the last thing to take down in case of emergency lounging.

Ditto what remstar said (I also used one throw each for a TQ and UQ.) I'd try the layering approach first--perhaps you could attach them so that baffles and seams alternate on different layers. Also,...
Why not hiking poles? I got mine on Amazon for $20.

I've got the Explorer Deluxe and it's a much rougher surface than any of my others (HyperD 1.0, PolyD 1.2, Hexon 1.0, Hexon 1.6) but I don't notice it much since I'm generally wearing a baselayer...
Seems interesting, especially the poncho part. I don't think it will "fly" with serious hammock users, but it might be more popular with novices (like Eno). Do American patents apply to products made...
My current favorite. Dutch ships very fast.
Thanks!

I happen to be one who respects scientific research over "theories" and anecdotes. Even people who don't feel that way are generally alive today because of science.
Comparing our health to...
Interesting idea, but you might want to do some research into the physiological effects of sleeping in a hammock full time. I've asked that question here before, and while there are plenty of people...
Great work (and nice stitches!)
Welcome from the Bronx. I started off with an Eno, got into DIY, and now have about 6 (gotta test different fabrics!) Went out on one Meetup and the people were great. See you out there sometime!
I know many of us aren't fans of the big stores but I've bought Tenacious Tape branded bugnet patches at REI.
While I'm not claustrophobic, I do have broad shoulders and hate shoulder squeeze. I also like firm hammocks for my lower back. I just made a wide hammock out of Dutch's Hexon 1.6 Wide and it works...
I haven't used a fronkey net yet, but I had imagined that the sides would fall inwards whereas the zipper on an integrated one keeps the bugnet taught. Is that not your experience?
I'm going to make the trip today. Will definitely share the wealth if I find some. Did you call other stores in the NJ/NYC area?

That's what I thought. I'm gonna try and convince my gf to take a drive to the beach in NJ with me tomorrow--with a small Costco detour :)
I think I found a winner with this fabric! Made a SL 11' yesterday and got a pretty flat lay comparable to my PolyD, but the extra width even let's me go on my stomach. Thanks Dutch!
Just so I don't waste the drive, are you headed to the Ocean, NJ one or a different one?
Hm, that's about 90 min from me...might be a worth a trip if I have a day off next week.
Just ordered my fabric! Nice job with the new checkout process, too.
Yes! Super excited for the fabric since I want to play around with the length on my first wide hammock!
How would you compare the stretch to PolyD or a heavier 1.6 or 1.9 nylon? I'd love to go lighter and and wider, but really don't like much stretch at all.
I thought that ripstop also helped to reduce stretch. Is that not true?
Fear not the splice! It's so easy once you learn it that you'll be making CLs in front of the TV!
Here's how I make mine:
Start by making a rolled hem along the sides. I make mine about a half inch wide; Dutch makes em wider, Eno makes them narrower. Do what's comfortable to your sewing...
I think it's just a matter a weight and bulk. My 2yr old NF 0F bag weighs 48oz while a similarly rated TQ from most of the vendors would be 20-27 oz, take up less space, and probably cost about the...
Making a channel is basically just making a larger hem (which you're going to do anyway) with a couple extra stitch lines. I usually gather mine but sometimes add the channel anyway. My one piece of...
Others may disagree, but after finding the most comfortable ridgeline length, I don't bother to check angle anymore.
I bought a bunch of those tensioners on Amazon for very cheap. Copy of the MSR ones. They work fine, but ultimately I think a plain truckers hitch, like Skurka uses, gives more flexibility and is...
My "no sew" option was to buy a ratcheting strap set at home depot ($12), remove the metal hook with some bolt cutters, and use a sheet bend (beckett hitch) to tie it to the amsteel CL. Super easy...
Haha, I feel the exact opposite way of Pipsissewa in that whipping instead of gathering allows you to adjust specific areas of tension in the hammock. HYOH!
Weight is the only con I can think of. I kept mine for car camping because it covers so much. Porch mode is especially nice.
Forgot to take a pic, but stayed near Stockbridge shelter in Harriman State Park on Sat. 50F during the day brought out more people than I'd seen out there in 6 months. Only two more shelters in HSP...
My Eno Sub7 is not my favorite for sleeping all night because I like to move around more than it lets me. That said, I love how small it packs up and use it all the time to lounge in my studio. If...
