I've camped on many hot mosquito filled nights, I had read that mosquitoes don't byte through double layer hammocks but wasn't sure if i trusted it. On a canoe trip several years ago I set up camp...
I have the older RR with aluminum connector pieces with a hole drilled in them that the pole ends connect to. All I did was cut a small piece of thin foam, attach it to outer side of the aluminum...
Algonquin is a great place for hammock camping, when I started doing canoe trips there 7-8 years ago my first trip was in a tent, my second trip I decided to try out hammock camping and something...
I have used my 40 deg wookie down to 23degrees, felt like the limit, its perfectly fine at 30 deg (I am a warm sleeper). I do agree with Shug I would take a 20 deg UQ for a May trip to be guaranteed...
Double layer blackbird XLC's are great (I am 5'10, 250-265lbs at any given time). I have both the heavy weight and the lightweight. The lightweight is my favourite but at my weight it does stretch a...
Same question as cmc4free asked, when you are in the hammock and you pull on the wookie near your shoulder does it slide easily side to side or does it feel really tight against the hammock. You want...
I have both Yeti and Wookie, vastly prefer the Wookie.
In terms of the Yeti moving in the night the best I found was putting a tiny niteize biner in the zipper pull closest to my face and run...
Just did a 8 night canoe trip with my Draumr XL, what works best for me I call the superman entrance. Stand on the side of the Draumr where the zipper starts/ends, unzip down to the foot box, while...
Ive got no problem using a 10 degree underquilt year round, in fact its the rating I recommend to my friends if they are only going to have one underquilt (10 with no overstuff)
Top quilts I cant...
Great read thanks for the trip report! I have only used my XL once so far in a light all night rain and didn’t think any extra water break would be needed beyond the strap buckles... I’ll be taking...
I used my new Draumr XL, pad and tarp for the first time this weekend and was just curious if my zipper is the same as everyone else's.
My zipper (single zipper) starts a couple inchs on the head...
2 things off top of my head:
1- migrate the down towards the cold spot, I generally force some of the down where my legs are towards my butt.
2- Wookie tension. When your lying in the hammock it...
Got same email today but for the Canadian warehouse, looking forward to trying it out.
Depends on how warm you sleep and the weather you camp in. But what I recommend to my friends for an all round you can only have 1 set is: 10 bottom, 30 top+ a Costco down throw.
I find bottom...
I am a warm sleeper and I truly regret buying a 20 degree +2 overstuff topquilt (UGQ bandit). Its a great quilt but unusable to me until temps go well under 20 degrees or I just sweat all night long....
I’ll take it for the Ambush per private message agreement.
Also from Montreal, also started with a snugpak. I am a warm sleeper, the snugpak was good down to -5Celcius for me as long as my underquilt is good.
My first attempt at replacing the snugpak was...
Ill vote XLC.
Ive owned both, both will be just fine for you assuming you order correct fabric and layers for your weight (I need either 2.4single or double layer lighter fabrics).
Ive sold my...
Going from BB to BBXLC I found the comfort to be very similar except the XLC was more forgiving to pitch, original BB I had to dial it in perfectly to avoid calf ridge, XLC I can sleep pretty good...
20-40 and as others have mentioned I guess I slightly prefer just above freezing for water filters sake, not personal comfort.
Typically I stuff my hammock, quilts and anything else I want to stay dry in a compactor bag at the bottom of my pack, assuming my suspension is dry and tree sap free it also goes inside the bag. If...
I understand what your saying but personally dont have the floppy fabric issue. My diagonal lay has me pretty close to edge to edge but I have experienced what your saying when I tried making a wide...
I’ve had the DD XL for several years, extremely versatile with the size and all the tie outs. I don’t use it often because it’s 2.2LBS but it’s great for hanging 2 chameleons side by side, can even...
Would just like to add I started using my BBXLCv2 this way with the UQP zippered directly to bugnet or winter cover and its by far my favorite hang. Love the feeling of free hanging inside the sock...
I dont have a 13f winter haven but perhaps you have your suspension too tight, if your angle is closer to 15 degrees on the straps for example your apex to apex distance would be longer than a 25...
I too am a warm sleeper, I bought a 20 degree bandit with 2oz overstuff that is almost unusable for me, I sweat way too much in it until around 25 degrees. I have used it as low as 8 degrees so far...
The zipper mod currently offered by warbonnet does not do the same thing as Brownings AFAIK. It just allows you to insert a pad, not pull the entire sock onto the hammock while its already deployed.
My first camping hammock was a double layer Blackbird, I got the warbonnet travel sock for it and used it a couple times in temps ranging from 8 (-13C) to a little above freezing.
Very impressed...
Yes , when you lying in the hammock if you feel behind your head underneath the hammock, the down of the wookie should start around your neck or bottom of your head... the pillow is what actually...
Looking at the picture your hang for a Blackbird is wrong, your foot end should be 12-18inches higher than the head end. Not always possible to tel in photos but Im sure your angle is wrong because...
That's a crazy introduction to canoe tripping! But considering everyone is ok, I'll be honest its the crazy, extreme and "bad" stuff that tend to make the best memories and stories to tell. I started...
wow Oneclick, scary to see such drastically different results from my own, cant blame you for writing 15D off when that damage is just from one use. I do however wonder if 20D would have fared any...
I understand, there is nothing wrong with over engineering your gear as long as the weight doesn't get out of control of course.
I might try DCF myself sometime too! No experience with that yet.
Curious how you guys reached the conclusion that 15D was too fragile.
Ive been using a membrane 15D winter dream for 2 years, It's been threw insane winds, winter hail storms with branches and...
Im 5'10, 250lbs, broad shoulders. I have BB XLC (doublelayer), Regular Chameleon and Wide Chameleon.
Reg Chameleon: shoulder squeeze
BB XLC: feels good
Wide Chameleon: shoulder is fine but I...
11f tarp with doors will be able to handle just about any situation and is lighter than a 12f.
That being said I still bought a 12f tarp myself (UGQ winter dream).
Weight is a little less...
I have a 2nd Gen XLC, it has loops and biners on the “shelf bugnet”, I also own an Elderado that I bought to try out the lightweight double layer body mostly. Eldorado “shelfless bugnet” has no loops...
I have a bug tent that can be used with a hammock inside it:

Basically the 2 zipper ends of the bug tent have triple zippers, use...

Been on several August Algonquin trips in hammocks, although I was canoe tripping and not hiking. I always bring a tarp with doors even in summer because alot of campsites along the lakes can be VERY...
Started with a WBBB double 1.7 (love it but had to get the pitch perfect) and now use a WBBB XLC 2nd Gen Heavy Double (just plain love it).
I would be shocked if you weren't warm enough INDOORS with a 40 wooki + topquilt... unless your a REALLY cold sleeper or your room temp is very low.
As for the clothing, except for extreme cold I...
I have a standard 10ft wooki that i use on a chameleon. Easy to do, I just used some paracord and a couple small biners. Easiest if you have someone to adjust the wooki when your in the chameleon....
"I also agree with your assessment of the location of the pullouts. That is one of the reasons I really like the Sheltowee. It's not directional and it has the pullouts on the bugnet creating a great...
IMHO you can compare hammock features but comparing hammock comfort is pointless, every persons body is different, everyone sleeps different.
My first real camping hammock was a 10ft WBBB. I...
Surprised no one else seems to have the issue but I find the zipper digs into my legs when I sit in the hammock like a chair, simple solution is to just fold 3-4 inches of the side fabric over itself...
My thoughts as an owner of a Wide 1.6 Chameleon, Standard 2.4 Chameleon and a Blackbird XLC heavyweight Double (new version).
For reference I am 5'10", 255lbs, broad shoulders.
Single layer 1.6...
Ive ordered many times in the last 3 years from cottage vendors, typically my shipments are in customs for 1-2 days of the tracking process.
When it comes to Duties I don't know how it works, I...
Comfort is very relative. Almost all the posts I see on this forum regarding the Chameleon find it VERY comfortable. I myself had a double layer 1.7 Blackbird before ordering a 1.6 Hexon Wide...
