Sorry guys, I can’t make this weekend at Wildcat but I will be staying at nearby Burr Oak lodge fri/sat to hike with friends. Sometimes we do a short loop at Wildcat on Saturday, maybe I’ll run into...
Rev,
Zaleski has potable water at all 3 of their primitive sites and pit toilets. They are various distances from the trailhead but there are options for short hikes into some of the sites, 1/4...
Anyone up for Zaleski?
Hey has anyone seen a more recent update on site closures? The park and pack sites had been closed due to storm damage from that tornado that went through last summer. November they were still...
I could do the 2nd weekend.
Hey gang,
It’s been a few years since I camped with any of the Ohio crew but would love to get out. This Friday discussion sounds doable.

I'm generally free through the week.

One of my hiking buddies always says, "never let the truth get in the way of a good story." :)

I got my cuben tarp in Dec. of 2010, I've used it a ton and it looks just the same to me as it did then. I have no wear issues or punctures at this point. I tend to fold and roll it into a stuff...
Was there over the weekend, seemed to get service on the peaks.
David
Welcome Kentkong, the Ohio folks are pretty enthusiastic winter campers, keep an eye out for get togethers.
David
Welcome and congrats on making the decision on the Vertex, would love to see/hear your experiences.
David
I haven't staked my bug net out in recent memory, it's usually tied back out of the way. And as far as pull outs on the tarp, haven't used them in recent memory either. I guess I never sensed that...
Hey, I'm in for the RRG the weekend of the 28th.
David
I tried my buddy's 1.7 single before I jumped on a 1.1 dbl on the used market. I much preferred the slight bit of stretch of the 1.7, if buying new I'd definitely go with the 1.7
David
That doesn't seem excessive, I've always vented my top cover and still get a fair bit of frost. Truthfully I don't see that it really helps boost temp ratings but it does help in windy conditions. ...
Lukesteg and I are planning to arrive at the trailhead around 5:00 so should put us in camp around dinner time.
David
That sounds like a lovely mess for the hike in, no matter, C camp is not that far from the trail head. Kinda wish for colder temps so the trail would be in better shape.
Not to worry about...
Hobe,
Water is pretty reliable at Zaleski year round, the Hope Furnace parking area probably makes the most sense for most hike and there is more than adequate parking at that time of year. I'm...
I'm ready for some Zaleski action too.
David
Looks like I'm out for this weekend as well. I think the Toe et. al. are only out for Sunday evening.
David
I should be up for Friday evening and probably leave out mid morning on Sat. I was texting with Tendertoe, he and a few others may be up for the weekend too, though their plans haven't firmed up. ...
That would depend on what your goals are, if you're dropping pack weight, then a cuben tarp is a great option. I can't comment on the benefits of a DIY Costco UQ vs buying an UQ, I'd tend to lean...
Right into camp, Wow that had to have been exciting! They're pretty active on that side of the forest around site 9, though I've never seen one up there, they sure have woken me up plenty of times....
I fold them flat across one another and typically just steepen the pitch to achieve some overlap. Generally I only ever close one end of the tarp so I can leave the other end pitched wider to allow...
Thanks Rev, more motivation to plan for myself a Teton trip for next summer.
David
Sorry Gfranxman, we bugged out just before noon, the weather just wasn't cooperating. I'm usually just a Friday night guy on these weekends but I plan to be back out in December on the 18th.
David
Probably the only reason I'd consider a 50* would be if I were very weight conscious. I agree with Shug, the 40* is a good choice, it has a good comfort range.
David
I'll be there around 4:00
David
I came up with an idea to splice a Dutch Hook onto a Prusik loop, that is what I use to hang my tarps on my ridgeline. The end with the hook runs through the D ring on the tarp and attaches on the...
Oh yes, lovely weather for an Ohio hang! Extreme weather just seems to be in keeping with tradition.
I agree, if site 9 is available when you get to the kiosk to register go with that and make a...

Not so! :)
David
9 or 10 should be your main sites, 8 wouldn't work for a group.
David
yeah, in situations of high winds and rain they have quite an advantage and I think are worth the extra weight. By high winds I mean like 40+ mph. In this kind of wind a winter tarp would be...
I usually just hand wash it in the bath tub, the shower is a convenient way to rinse it down and a place to let it drip dry.
David
I don't see why not, whoopies are certainly easy enough, shaves a few ounces and a little less bulk. You really don't need all the cool bling just straps, sticks and whoopies.
David
Both Zaleski state forest and Mohican state forest are excellent locations for winter hangs, we would basically have either place to ourselves that time of year. Both lend themselves to those who...
Yes there is a trail from the access road to C Camp it's a water access road that the forestry rangers use to bring water in to C Camp. Be advised not to block the gate. There is plenty of parking...
A new UQ is like a new bow, you gotta put a little time into getting it dialed in before you head to the field. :)
David
C Camp is 1/4 mile from the service road, maybe closer.
David
In past years we've been more active in the fall and on through mid winter, I still like to go in the colder months.
And I'm a yes for the weekend after Thanksgiving.
David
Good on ya HoboP for getting things going.
David
20* partial length is what I started with, I now have a full compliment of summer/3 season/winter quilts but the 20* set is what I take out the vast majority of the time.
David
In good for both dates
David
Recently I've been carrying a mix of mostly Vargo ti nails and a couple of MSR groundhogs in case of soft ground. But the biggest reason I always carry a MSR groundhog or two is that I use it...
Down shift can be an advantage in a hammock quilt i.e. the HG, you can shake the loft to the top of the quilt where it does the most good.
Keep in mind that staying warm is about more than just...
Hey New Guy! Site 2 is one of my favs there along that stream. Some of the Ohio gang may get together at Mohican park and pack site 9 either 10/16 or the weekend after Thanksgiving, watch for a...
Slo! Would be great to see ya.
David
That's the part that takes the most skill development, you might do some practice with some inexpensive double sided tape and visqueen.
David
My style of camping seems to be changing over time, by default, I tend to pack for foul weather (i.e. winter tarp w/doors) most any time of the year yet I find myself not bothering to even hang the...
