I use Permatex Flowable Silicone Windshield Sealant available at AutoZone and other auto shops. It is useable directly from the tube and does a great job.

I have several loaner hammocks. I also have some synthetic UQ/TQ sets I use as loaners. Since I'm usually camping in the summer, it often isn't an issue.
My downy goodness is a bit too expensive...

Only when liquid. Once dry, there is no problem with cats. I have cats and all my summer clothes get doused in permethrin, and both the cats and I are happy once the clothes dry.

Regarding "upgrading the zing-it to something more substantial", Zing-It has a 500 pound breaking strength. Those little loops will remain long after your tarp shreds and blows away.
