A recessed bar design like the Ariel
Got my hopes up for a design update.
Recessed-bar Ridgerunner would be a game changer!!
I’m partial to quilts over bags - even when I have to go to ground. They are usually lighter for a given temp rating too.
Not sure what the climate is like in your neck of the woods during summer,...
Also, if it’s still tacky, you can apply some baby powder to the tacky silicone. This will coat the curing sealant and prevent it from adhering to other parts of the tarp.
I can attest to the hexon 1.6. I recently built a bridge based on Ariel dimensions using a double layer with 1.6 and 1.0 hexon. I weigh about 215 and there’s plenty of support. Here’s a link to...
Great info, thanks!
This is a great resource:
https://backpackergeek.wordpress.com/2017/05/22/closed-cell-foam-pads-part-2/
I’d like to know the differences; there’s a lot of conflicting information on foam types - specifically the performance of each of the different types. Apprently there’s a big difference Iin...
I used seam grip for my pu4000 tarp, using pack material as reinforcement. I made sure to liberally apply the adhesive making sure the edges had plenty so it would never start to peel. Three years...
Wow! Can’t wait to try it out! Looking forward to the spec sheet.
Awesome tarp! Congrats!
Now we just need a line loc v HOOK
Hornblower,
-The weight of the hammock in the Bishop bag is 343 grams (this includes two Loopaliens at the ends-I know, not meant for hammock suspension)
-Weight with poles is 660 grams (two 18”...
Fjrpilot,
Thanks! Btw, How’s that “Ariel bridge for a bigger guy” holding up I saw from a thread a while back?
Thanks Bill!
I look forward to that write-up! Btw, the stencil I set up for this project (hardboard cutout) really made measuring, cutting a brainless activity.
I’m not sure of a seam grip alternative. I know it is urethane based and that’s why it is adherent to pu4000. Maybe thin some urethane based clear caulk and apply that? I’m really not 100% sure. ...
I did roll the hem like Bic. I also increased the width of the hammock (based on Ariel dimensions) to account for the rolled edges.
I used Dutch’s UHMWPE spider webbing for the edges - tough stuff...
I would probably try to remove all the silicone I could, then apply some seam grip to it. Good luck!

Here are some pics of the corners and the channel for the dog bone. Also the first pic is of the bar tip insertion; I didn’t invent that - Just Bill showed me that in another...
Yes, I separated the layers and sewed separate hems to allow for a pad to be insterted in between the layers. I’ll try to get some pics of the bar insertion up for you when I get home.
Hey all,
I just finished another recessed bar bridge based on the Ariel dimensions but using a rolled webbing (spider webbing from Dutch) design. Came out great! I actually built two at the same...
I’ve never tried the steel, it seems like it would work great. I never tried it because I was afraid it would absorb too much of the heat from the soldering iron, making it more difficult to cut the...
Basically, that’s Grizz’s Ariel pattern with a few modifications. There is a great YouTube for that, just search for “engineering the Grizz bridge Ariel.” It’s a recessed bar design. Anyway, the...
Just a quick update - I had to switch to a size 14 needle after I noticed the thread starting to fray. No problems since
It’s a weller soldering iron. I borrowed it from my father in law, but I’ll be getting my own soon. That tip came with his kit. It’s available at the big box stores. Fumes are minimal. I can cut...
You’re welcome! I’d like to try it with a tarp one day as well - may be tough to get stencil material though. I’d probably have to piece several together
Pics say it all - I used 1/4” tempered hardboard ($9 per sheet at Lowes/hd). It works great because the soldering iron doesn’t seem to burn in much at all when cutting. This is a higher voltage...
Quick update - I’m well under way with my new bridge project. I’m using Tera 60 with an 80/12 microtex with great results. My machine is running silky smooth with this combo.
Thanks for the responses. Since I’m making another bridge, I’m gonna give the Tera 60 a go with a size 14 needle and adjust as necessary.
I guess the title says it all. Lately I have been using Tera 80 for my sewing and am about to sew a new bridge with it (I recently sewed a bridge with it and it’s working great). I picked it...
This is how I did it. Still going strong.

I actually like to supplement with a pad in my ridgerunner and it gives me a go to ground option. Take a look at some dimensions for top quilts. I would go with a 50” wide at a minimum. Good luck...
Thanks WV, I bought two spools from WAWAK and hope to start on another bridge soon.
Hey Bill,
What type/size needle do you use with the Tera 60?
Thanks!
Tao, I can’t find my old notes on the build. However, you should be able to measure the ridgerunner itself using a flexible sewing tape measure, then apply those measurements to your...
Hey Tao,
It’s still working great; I used it a couple weeks ago on a weekend hike - temps were low 40’s at night. This was without the additional button-on smaller quilt.
As far as...
It’s such an interesting hobby; there’s always a few things that can be tweaked to see if a different design works. Subtle changes can make a big difference. I like your point about how a channeled...
Bill,
I definitely see your point about stress lines in the illustration you gave. I wonder though how the corner of the material was cut before binding:169860
Sorry for the crude drawing. It...
Thanks Tightwad and Grizz!
Grizz, I’ve actually already designed the template for the hybrid you described. With Dutch’s new spider 1.5, the weight is only 1.5gm/ft, basically eliminating the...
Thanks FJRPilot, I read your ariel bridge for a bigger guy thread a few times. HF is such an awesome resource.
The spreader bar attachment was a little too time consuming. When I do another...
Hi all,
I’ve just finished my webbing based recessed bar bridge hammock based on the Ariel by Grizz. I used double layer Hexon from Dutch (1.6 outer and 1.0 inner layer). The webbing is Dutch’s...
For tieouts: Ti stake —->6 ft of zingit—->line lock hook—->shock cord loop on tarp tieouts (I like to leave my zingit and line lock hook permanently attached to my stakes so I don’t lose a stake). I...
Bill,
That looks sleek and comfy! What’s the apex to apex distance?
Thanks bill! Here’s one last pic of me in prone position. 169717

Well endcaps are on, it holds my weight, and I can lie on my stomach. Those were my three basic goals. I’ll make a write up in another thread. Thanks for your advice guys!
Sounds great man, I’m sure you’ll have success. I look forward to seeing your Ariel build thread!
Bill and Grizz know all this stuff far better than I for sure. They are extremely generous in sharing their knowledge with the rest of the community. One day I’d like to build a true ariel - I’m...
Johnson, I’m just finishing a webbing based hammock based on the ariel dimensions. While it’s not tested for longevity like the ariel is, it does have a nice flat lay.
I think the next time I’ll...
The sewing bobbin sounds like a good idea; I’ll look for one - might even have one lying around the house.
Are the Easton .625 poles strong enough? I would like to do the .742 but they only come...
Thanks WV and Bill - I’ll be sure to add those stitches today. After that seam grip sets up, those patches feel like thick leather - really strong. Does anyone have any suggestions on joining the...
