Starting a new job January 18, not sure of participation, but will stay tuned.
I'm actually home from December 17 to January 18, and available weekends after that... So count me in!
I'm out for both weekends, unfortunately - but will be watching for trip report. Take lots of photos and catch lots of trouts!
I will be at my new job in fort mac during that time :(
Full disclosure - that's not me :) I found the picture on the internet and had to share.

And here are ten characters to fill out the post.
Epic hang.
Sorry we missed this one, guys - we took a much shorter trip to crotch lake, and even that was a strain on Toot's knee.
Have you ever had an EGL hang at crotch lake? There's a giant beach with...
We'll be coming in Friday morning as well - are you planning on altering the route? or just doing the whole thing in one less day?
Perhaps we can meet up too and start the adventure together -...
You are correct on the EGL! Give the man a cookie! :) you're allowed to be jealous - and you're allowed to come along too.
Chard - we'll probably either be just before or just after the portage...
Bad news everyone!
Cindy hurt her knee on our test run last week - so no long paddles for her (and portages are all me carrying!) We're still coming up, but we're going to stop either on Hambone...
Any decisions on shared meal? Site to look for ya'll at on Friday afternoon?
We get our passes at the access point right there, or at the east gate?
Open side up? THAT'S what I've been doing wrong :) It's a new (to us) canoe as well - we've done very well this year. Focused on camping this season for sure. See you all next week (at the...
Test hang this weekend at Billy Lake for me. Going in Friday with a whole bunch of new Dutch bling. Splake, here I come.
Glad you made it out ok! Excellent read, and great lesson - thank you.
I had a similar feeling experience (though not so dangerous in reality) I grew up in a a place called Waterhen Lake...
I ordered tree straps from Dutchwaregear.com - comes in multiple lengths, one loop already sewn in, and CHEAP. it's good stuff, too.
you can order from readystrap.com as well. Diy gear supply...
you can do a bit of a "cowboy roll" out also - lie on your stomach and hang one leg down to the ground, do a sort of push up and twist.
Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! :)
spicy fish stew with fresh trout?
Spring 2014
Chard - Veteran - 29/1 - Solo*
Keg - Veteran enough - solo (could partner up - will be renting anyways) Probably Fri-Sun
Iguana/+1? - Veteran - 29/1 - Solo (Possibly bringing one of my...
submitted a vacation request for Friday May 30. We'll see how it works out. Either way, I think we're in - even if just for a paddle in and paddle out!
Just to clarify - we meet up for the weekend (those of us who are short tripping) on little trout lake? That would be in at access three, across 3 inches of Magnetawan-> short portage -> Hambone ->...

image 2-7 are down the street from my house, and a couple of days old- water is a foot or so higher now
edit: also - this picture...
Well... the creek is rising here pretty hard. State of emergency, and people just up the road are being evacuated. I'm thankful I live on the eighth floor.
The suspense is killing me! :)
Excellent find - just a caveat for those of us who are... supersized, this one has a weight limit of 250lbs - the Helinox is 325lbs or so.
Hi mods,
I had a DIY canoe thread that was moved to off-topic - no arguments here, in the heat of the moment, I wanted to share with everyone here; but it is definitely off topic.
The issue is...
I use a ranger blanket as an uq protector or 3/4 sock (it wraps almost completely around me, leaving the top open) and I've slept in several -20 Celcius nights, snug as a bug with a 20 degree...
In for Saturday & Sunday (optional Friday night if close enough/nice enough) as long as it's not a four day paddle to catch up :)
Maybe we could start an EGL google calendar?
Less good for me, but still doable - it will only be a one night hang for me and Toots - I have a long weekend the previous week.
Clicking on links for announcements on the home page (read more link) gives me an access denied message. Not critical, really, I got the jist of the announcement - just to let you know it isn't...
What is your favourite spot along hwy 60 in Algonquin to go?
Qualifications:
1. access from the hwy 60 corridor
2. total portage distance < 1km
3. private (ish) most of Algonquin past 1 portage...
This weekend is a nogo for me - I'm coming down with the mother of all colds, and I have to attend court (to watch a friend's moot trial - I didn't do it, no one saw me, can't prove anything, and...
I believe that I can confirm 2 hangers for that weekend - Toots and myself.
Length of the beam actually doesn't matter (for compressive load) it gets complicated with flexural load - you need to know the flexural modulus and moi of the beam. It changes based on shape and...
Fantastic idea... I haven't found my ideal spot, yet. I have a list of requirements, though.
1. Rocks. Mountains optional.
2. Water - trout required.
3. No people, except me and my wife.
...
Aluminum pipe would be stronger (by far) for the same weight and you might want to look into the strength properties of triangles. Make something that is shaped like a back yard swing set.
If I don't have to snowshoe - I might be up for that...
or if someone can lend/rent snowshoes and show me how to use them...
Kiosk lake? around the second point across from the access point?
A 5km portage would count me out (probably) due to "considerations" but otherwise, I am in.
I have the 23rd of May booked off - so the only weekend you didn't mention is the best for me. But I...
Awesome report - worth the wait. I've been checking back for it every day!
I'm glad I didn't make this one (only because I don't have snowshoes), but definitely looking forward to the spring trip!
I got one of these on sale for $20 and it seems to work pretty well.

Update on my situation for the trip -...
+1 they are awesome.
I have faith in you. :)
Update - the quilts came in and are beautiful!
I used them out in the wilds of my sister in-law's back woods and they worked pretty well. I need to simplify my suspension a little, but they...
Totally in - thanks for including the international population :)
I'm in if I can find/make a new tarp by then - did a test hang in my in-laws back woods and woke up covered in snow. :)
Beaks/doors are a must (or a sock)
Otherwise, 20 degree revelationx and a...
I have a potentially stupid question - why does it matter? I hang whatever end is going to be the head this time a little lower than the foot and done.
Are some hammocks different shapes...
Nah, red at the head and brown at the bottom
it's off - everyone has had something come up.
It was kind of last minute - so <shrug>
I'm working with unproven gear, so I'm going to stick closer to home and hang out in my in-laws back 40...
