As the old saying goes, "if you can't tie knots, tie lots"
November 2023? Man, I can't think of a single thing I've planned a year and a half in advance.
Usually people sort of build in a "weakest link" in the ridgeline. Most people would rather have a ridgeline loosen/break rather than tear a tarp. They're cheap and easily replaceable (especially if...
Not likely unfortunately.
Before I wrap up my ridgeline, I slide one nama claw to the other side, so that both are ALL the way to one end. Then bundle up the rest, good to go.
I've actually found gray to be a color that blends in well to the shadows in most areas. And if you're hanging, you're probably in the shadows.
I built an insulated hammock and love it. Your underquilt is hung perfectly every time, and setup is that much faster. I'm always able to compensate for temperature difference with different top...
A pellet gun is probably your best bet. Or a paintball gun if you're... a cat lover.
I've often thought about this and plan on trying it soon hopefully.
Put your sappy, wet suspension in a ziplock bag, and stuff that into your hammock sack. Done.
The hammock version of "dress for the slide, not the ride"? Apparently Bennington refuses to ride if it's "icky" out.
So what, pray tell, do you do if you wake up and it's (gasp!) raining? Stay in the hammock until it stops?
10 seconds to wipe off your seat isn't the end of the world, vs 60 seconds to fold up and pack all that extra fabric (let alone the bulk).
As someone who does 90% of my camping/hanging on motorcycle trips, this is pretty cool. However, I can't imagine camping in a place where I would be so concerned about my motorcycle that it needs to...
I'm still confused as to how you know your tarp isn't blocking the UV-something...?
How do you know UV (A or B?) was getting through your tarp?
FYI, a standard razor blade cuts through like butter, and is dirt cheap.
I use these with zing-it, they're awesome. Small, light, and simple.
Any advice on pullout placement laterally? Pullouts are made, getting ready to sew these buggers.
Thanks guys. I'll order some of the Seam Grip and give it a go. It looks like some people complain that it stays tacky instead of truly "drying", I'll have to test it before using it I suppose. Looks...
Nobody? Bueller? Guess it's time for the very permanent guessing game I'm oh-so used to playing!
I've got a new PU coated nylon tarp and 2 poles from Dutch to add on. It seems a lot of people recommend simply gluing on the tie outs after sewing on the grograin loops, which had never even crossed...
When I added a bug net to my old Dutch gathered end, I had the wife lay in it, draped the netting over the ridgeline (after sewing the 2 halves together) and pinned one side. Sewed that, then had her...
Just about any sewing machine will work just fine for lightweight hammock gear. Hop on Craigslist and pick up a Singer Talent or similar for $40 and have at it.
I'm just going to drop off a quick anecdote here, feel free to ignore it.
My buddy in college was a competitive cross country skier. During one race, a fellow in front of him with carbon ski poles...
I actually just fired up my 3D printer for the first time in the few weeks. It's printing some watchmaking tools about 18" from my keyboard as I'm typing this.
Clever idea. Nice and simple.
Have you given any thought to what happens if one of your spreaders springs a leak on the trail? Other inflatables losing air on the trail may make you uncomfortable, but a bridge hammock without a...
I would have never thought I would like a plaid tarp. But now I think I may have to make one...
The ones I use come from Joann Fabric. Nice and cheap too.

I always laugh when people talk about what's "safe" when hammocking. If you're not over a cliff, I think a good lesson and a little knowledge is worth a little bruise on your butt.
I made a modified BIC bridge, and did the suspension this way. Essentially 4 separate dog bones. On the tree side I larks head the 2 loops around descender rings.
$20 for a stuff sack!? I need to get into the stuff sack business apparently, for about $3 and 10 minutes I can have one of those finished sitting in front of me...
I'm glad I found this! I've known about (and had in my Amazon cart) these feet for a long time, just never bit the bullet. Now I don't have to!
If anyone's looking for cheap property down in hurricane alley, I'd imagine some of the smarter folk are about to start selling...
Just do what I do... never get up in the middle of the night to pee! I think I do that about once a year. You guys must be over-hydrated!
The ONE time I "missed" the hammock, was when I was sewing...
I did what was essentially an UQ sewn to my Dutch, works wonderfully. Once I get the shape/size nailed down on my newest DIY bridge, it will be getting the same treatment. Granted, this setup is not...
I did a modified Bic bridge last year and got some guff on my overly heavy (albeit free) spreader brackets. LOVE the bobbin idea.
Nice idea! Personally, most of my stuff sacks are DIY, and I often repurpose (or steal) stuff sacks when I need one of a certain size, so permanently marking them would not be a good idea. In fact, I...
My dogs have been skunked 3 times in the last 2 years. This IS the best way to get out skunk smell.
1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
3 or 4 drops of dish detergent
Mix well,...
It's not about them taking a long range shot, it's about them taking a close (or close-ish) shot and missing. I know of more than one hunter who quit hunting completely thanks to close calls from...
You must not realize how far a bullet can travel
That pic in particular actually gives me a neat idea for a DIY. Thanks!
I like how OP said "I'll just sew it up, unless there's something better", and everyone suggests tape. Not that various repair tapes aren't wonderful, but NO, there is NOTHING "BETTER" than sewing it...
Neither of my pups are allowed near the hammocks, for fear of damage. I've never had them backpacking yet (hope to soon), only car camping. I've always brought a kennel for each of them, as it keeps...
I hunt whenever I get a chance. Besides wearing lots of orange, there's not much you can do besides be careful.
If I were hammock camping where I thought there may be hunters, I'd get a BRIGHT...
****, that looks complicated! What exactly are you having trouble adjusting?
Winter camping always sounded horrendous... until now.
That looks straight up luxurious. Well done!
Ah, I was afraid there might be a hammock at the end! What I mean by "upside down" is that if the hook were rotated 180 degrees (open bit facing up), the line wouldn't fall out should you get any...
