Hopefully not at the same time!
Whoopie slings are far superior for the following reasons:
1. They’re easy and fun to make.
2. You get to say “Whoopie” a lot - even if only in your own head!
3. You can use small sticks for...
I have a WBBB XLC with all the bells and whistles that I use when I’m out by myself.
I also have a DIY hammock for use with a mat and sleeping bag.
When I’m out with a newbie, I put them in the...
Good job!
I did a similar stand but used iron for the struts as I wanted the additional strength. Got these from a specialist, everything else from Bunnings.
The whole idea of the double layer is to trap your sleeping mat to make sure it doesn’t move around as much.
I used a sleeping mat for a while with my WBBB XLC and then converted to the Wookie UQ....
And just remember, if you can’t tie knots, tie lots!
I’d use an anchor hitch:

Sober.
Drunk.
In-between.
Sorry :)
Here are my reasons:
They work.
They’re light and easy to adjust.
I like to hang on things I’ve made.
As Shug said, you get to say “whoopie” in public.
And, finally, I like using a small stick...
One.
Based on the recommendations on this forum, I bought a WBBB XLC sight unseen.
Put it up once in the back yard to work out how it went then went on a 10-day hike with it.
Very satisfied!
...
Sounds like you’re trying to make a complicated system work when it can all be quite simple.
Strongly recommend you look at Shug’s videos on YouTube.
Also, see if there is a hang near you where...
A Nalgene bottle is (not surprisingly) a bottle made of Nalgene.
They have three main uses:
1. Carrying drinking water
2. Putting hot water in to use as a hot-water bottle
3. Peeing in so you...
I bit the bullet and set off on a week-long hike with only my WBBB XLC the first time I slept in my hammock.
Prior to that, just a couple of goes setting it up to make sure I knew how to do it.
...
I find I need a very small height under my head.
I tried inflatable pillows but they were usually too high.
I now use my down jacket inside my top-quilt bag and it’s perfect.
It does tend to end...
Hi, John, there’s a few of us Aussies on the forum!
Get thee to a group hang.
Lots of friendly people who will get a buzz out of helping a new entrant to the journey.
No need for a toggle, just use a stick!
I did a 12-day hike where I knew at least 2 or 3 of the nights would not have trees (in the Australian outback).
I carried a Thermarest pad and Polycro just for that situation.
I didn’t need my...
Two things:
Lightweight and comfort are fine.
Lightweight, comfort and cheap is the hard part.
Re length, why don’t you prepare one end of the hammock as normal then tie off the other end at...
Hmm, I have an Underquilt, top quilt, tarp and hammock.
Which if these would I choose to “wrap myself in to keep warm”?
Probably not the hammock!
Strongly agree on the “make it easy and fun” approach!
Also consider taking a couple of small luxuries to make it go well.
Once she’s got the bug you can work up to more.
I usually end up with my tarp around shoulder height.
Seems to work for me!
I’d be really worried about the lateral stresses you’re putting on that post. They’re not designed for sideways pressure.
Oh, and welcome!
With the WBBB XLC you can put all of that in the shelf.
The only thing I hang on my ridge line is my watch that doubles as my thermometer so that I can grab it easily in the dark.
With the...
I’m 16,000 km away so can’t vouch for these, but check out:

On the plus side, if you sleep in a sleeping bag, the down can expand between the rope squares and give you some bottom insulation.
Apart from that, don’t really see the point but HYOH.
I haven’t tried anything other than the Wookie, but yes!
:)
I carry a 2m piece of 3mm Dyneema rope with loops on each end and an S-biner.
Useful for all sorts of situations, including clipping my pack either to a tree or to the ridge line of my hammock to...
As 1-H-L said, it’s probably better not to have the join right in the middle. Probably not a significant issue either way.
When drilling metal, make sure you keep plenty of oil on the drill bit. This will cool the bit and make everything work much better.
Also, strongly recommend using a small drill bit first to make...
Double thumbs up!
A slightly different view:
Since you’re new to all aspects of hanging, you’re probably still getting your hang angles, height of each end and so on all sorted.
I would start with whoopie slings...
Probably evolved from rock/mountain climbers who developed ways to sleep while hanging off a rope.

With the WWBB XLC I sleep with my shoulder next to the logo (not my head).
Try sliding yourself along the hammock so you’re head is closer to the end.

Or a couple of Luci Lights.
I think you’ll also be surprised about how light it is in your back yard once your eyes adjust.
I’m confused. Aren’t tree huggers just tree straps with a loop on both ends?
Why don’t you just tie a knot (such as a marlin spike hitch) in your tree huggers if you want to shorten them? i.e....
Hi, Ginecha,
You might want to check the name of this forum. It’s about hammocks rather than general camping.
Coming on here and asking for the best way to carry your tent is probably not the...
The Wookie UQ (designed for WBBBs, don’t know about how it goes for others) greatly reduces the complexity - and therefore time - it takes to deploy.
Yep - they were in the hardware shop right next to the tubing.

I would focus on getting your tarp up as quickly as possible. Once that’s done, both you and your gear can be out of the rain while you get organised.
Most people keep their tarps and associated...
I’d be more worried about drop bears as they come from the branches above you and are carnivorous.
p.s. Bright colours won’t help at night as you can’t see colours after dark. The ability to see...
Hi, Banj,
There’s a few of us here but not many.
Once you go the UQ route you won’t look back!
Why don't you see if you can borrow a decent, thermally insulating sleeping mat and try that first along with your sleeping bag.
You will probably find that will be enough given your location....
A better sleeping mat plus a good sleeping bag should work.
Also try dropping hints to friends and family about Tier Gear’s quilts. ;)
I would take both and use both the sleeping mat and the Underquilt at the shelters. Warmer and more comfortable.
Plus you may find you sleep in your hammock anyway if the shelters are full or you...
If you do want to buy him a hammock rather than a gift certificate, I recommend you stick to one of the preferred vendors on this forum.
If he tries it and it doesn’t work out then the resale value...
Or use square tubing rather than round.
Obviously hammocks have been used extensively on ships for hundreds of years.
Or a bowline.
