Right  I'm a cold sleeper so I'm sure it wont get me to 20* but maybe someone. Based on when I camp I need it to be capable of taking me into the 30s at the lowest, which is what drove my...
Yeah, i keep shaking it. Maybe its looking better. Could be its just not spread out enough. I do trust the marh and have no desire to waste money on down I don’t need.
About 2.5 inches. The weight of a yard stick is enough to dent the chambers a bit. The calculator rating is about 10deg but 20 was the target. 2in baffle.
Mostly I am concerned that if there is...
Looks good
I'm working on my first DIY down UQ. It 78" long with 11, 2" differential (5"/4.25") baffles and 10 .375" pleats that add 7.5" to the length of the outer shell. I used a modified version of the UQ...
Thanks for sharing your update!
I'm all about KISS. That's why I asked a question after a couple attempts that didn't seem simple.
So the way you are doing it is the baffle material is sandwiched in the hem? or is there sort of...
I'm going to make my first down UQ over winter (his & hers set actually). I was experimenting with scrap fabric this weekend and made a model (two short chambers, only one end) to sort out just how...
In my experience a W whip (exactly as described above) will add some tension to the edges and middle of the hammock body. This will result in a slightly flatter lie but a stiffer feel, in my...
Noted and thanks.
Here is a link to the calculator thread. There are a couple evolutions, the latest version being on Google Sheets.

I've always made a rolled hem on both bug netting and the hammock body first and then attached the zipper to that. This looks like an interesting alternative. It's still two passes but you avoid...
That is certainly how it works out when it comes down to it. I figure my odds of having a good result are better if I start with a good plan and that's the point I'm at, measuring with a micrometer.
If it works, it works. I've been experimenting with ways to put a cord pocket on the outside of mine so far they all have a bit of a Frankenstein aura about them too.
I don't bother trying to sew...
Yeah, I found myself doing the same thing. You do have to be able to measure things. Also tweaking the % overstuff to get a reasonable fraction on down.
Was your baffle height close to 2"? ...
OK, I think I figured out a piece of this. The equation was written a little funny but the UQ calculator is assuming the curved portion of the baffle corresponds to an ellipse. So its calculating the...
I've read that there should be some extra loft in a down UQ chamber, beyond what you would need purely to satisfy a differential. My first question is why? Is this just wiggle room because everything...
I don't know about ALL of them but have a 6460 and it has this feature and it is useful.
I am 6'2" and 220. My DIY hammock bodies are 11' with a 111" +-1" ridge line. This is comfortable for me. I do always try to use fabric that is at least 60" wide. I don't find much difference...
What I do is attach a bit of nylon ribbon to each end of the zipper so I'm working with that at the peaks and not the zipper. Easier and it winds up looking pretty good.
I did a similar design that I posted on a few years back and have been using since. Each of the three side segments were exactly 1/3 the length of the body and that has worked out well. I used tent...
Very creative.
Not dac but quest outfitters does sell pole parts.
I have a small thermarest pillow. Not ultralight but I canoe camp so I don't care. Perfect for under my neck. http://www.rei.com/product/719843/therm-a-rest-compressible-pillow
Some quilting loops would also do the trick and would not compress the insulation like a sewn through baffle. As I understand it the only reason you need to quilt CS is to protect it from the stress...
I was just teasing...
Very nice.
Yeah, that 5oz apex is warm Fluffy stuff. I think it'll be good to 30 pretty easily.
What are the dimensions on this? Is it just rectangular or is there a taper to it? Did you do any quilting...
That's what it looked like... someone take your hat? :)
I agree10' 6" is plenty. I'm 6' 2" and make mine 11' hemmed. Most of the commercial hammocks, including the infamous blackbird are shorter than this.
On the Amsteel I would go with a lighter...
I understand the poncho thing but what is that on your head?
I make mine adjustable. I finish both ends with a Brummell that I loop over the end mass, over the whipping.
Huh. Never occurred to me to use a bishop bag with a tarp. Duh. Seems to work pretty well.
I'd be careful that whatever you use does not run, leech or peel off in a wilderness setting.
Don't hang under widow makers in the future.
I tend to agree. Replacing the entire body is the only option I would consider of it were me.
Oft referred to as a peak bag. Never seen one with a Velcro closure though.
Nice work.
What is the weight on this?
One of the members here sets up a tent indoors and does his down work in there.
I wouldn't tape either. Sometimes I will pin but probably no for a plain rolled hem. I like to mark the fabric so I roll a straight hem.
You need enough body fabric to get flat. A Blackbird is 120 in long. The ridge line is 101.
Im 6'2" My indoor sleeping hammock is 132. My ridge line is adjustable, seems to be most comfortable...
Never considered a cat on the ends. The renown warbonnet yeti has a channel suspension, convexly curved sides (they are not symmetric) and is straight across the ends.
The concave curve on the...
Nice job. What is the weight of the polyester you used?
With the arched sides I assume you are planning channel suspension. That should be fine but I would not arch the ends. They tend to sag a bit and that may give you air gap problems.
Hmmm I just made a small ground cloth out of pack cloth. I put it under the hammock and toss stuff on that Makes a nice little rug too.
My first DIY design had a foot box. The only manner in which lay is affected is that with a foot box you're more likely to get maximum angle to the midline. That will be flatter but you can get there...
I believe there is a sticky of sir knotty's mod. Explains the whole thing pretty well.
My REI primaloft bag is also sewn through. There are two layers, one sewn to each side of the shell. The rows of stitches alternate between the sides so there is always uncompressed insulation. Seems...
