Keep it up. Can't wait for the pics.
That would be more than adequate. 12' huggers will make it around most trees up there and the 6' woopie slings will cover the distance between them.
There is a high likelihood that 5' huggers may not cut it out there. If you can, get 10'. I go with 15' and have needed all of it for larger trees. They're pretty darn big out here.
I assume you'll be around the South Lake Tahoe area and since you're a backpacker, elevation and ruggedness probably won't be an issue.
Some great destinations for day hikes are starting at the...
Lake Aloha on the east side is full of trees. Be ready to hang your food or bring a bear can. Also, tons of mosquito spray.
I did the TRT last year (2017) and switched out my hammock half way through, though I regretted it. You can definitely hang every night!
I backpack and hammock camp in Desolation Wilderness a ton and have done the Tahoe Rim Trail. You can hang every night there and the trees are plentiful.
Good luck, have fun, and stay safe!
The TM store has much more to offer than Reds. You could get what you needed from the TM store to make it to Reds easily, since it is only a couple day's hike away.
The Reds store was hit or miss...
15' is more than enough for the JMT. I used 15' tree straps and never came close to needing more. If you are concerned, I have previously used whoopies attached to my tree straps to give me extra...
Okay, here's a new question (or two):
We scheduled arriving at MTR on 9/8. MTR said today on phone that they are closing on 9/7 (cabins and restaurant, not sure about store?) (but apparently is...
It was my last night and I cowboy camped right on top of the ground, on top of my hiking partner's tent footprint.
You could send a small air pad, like a half air pad and save some weight, or one of...
This was my setup - I brought along a bunch of Zing-it/Lash-it and ran them from my trekking poles to the large granite boulders. Ran my Warbonnet Superfly between the 2 poles and done.
...
Yes, trekking poles to granite boulders and then tarp tied to them. If I could do it again, I would have just cowboy camped that night, because changes are you'll want to wake up early to catch the...
You can completely hang on the JMT, except at Guitar Lake (unless you bring a pair of cams to lock into the granite). You need to go onto the Facebook group for the JMT and ask. Many have done it,...
I hammocked it in 2016, no problems at all. There are others on the JMT Facebook group who have done in several times without issue.
The only time I could not hang was at Guitar Lake, where you...
Yea, besides the pacing, prior to setting up the camera, I did the arms out with trekking poles thing, which is 14' for me. It was another 2-3' to the tree, so I should realized then to hang higher. ...
Yes, I had the app on my phone, had trekking poles which account for 4' each, plus my wing span of almost 6'. I pegged the distance to about 15'-16'. I actually raised both ends on the hammock after...
Thanks for the tips. There was a guy sleeping in the middle of the frozen lake atop a pad in his sleeping bag. Some people... lol
You're right, that's a good trick! This hilly spot was the only spot not covered in snow within a mile or so. I slept ok, but my feet were nearly at the end of the hammock when I woke up. So head end...
That's what I was thinking too and the ridgeline was super tight. It's been awhile since I've hung and boy, do you forget a lot of things, such as proper height and distance and the relationship. And...
So I took a backpacking trip this past Memorial Day weekend and found 2 trees about 15-16' apart to hang. I made a video and something just doesn't feel right - is the hang angle off? Do my tree...
I did it August 2016 with a hammock the whole way, 14 days. Basically, you'll know how much time you have left, how far you can walk, and tree line is around 10500 (plus or minus 300 ft).
You could...
I did not bring a pad, just a Loco Libre 10 UQ and a EE Revelation 10 TQ.
I saw another hammock camper with a pad and I myself own a Thermarest Xtherm Long Max, for use specifically in my hammock,...
I'm an extremely cold sleeper and took the Jarbridge down to 7F, but that was in combination with a THermarest Z-lite Sol. When it's that cold though, you'll definitely be able to find any drafts.
I've always just used some sticks I find or my trekking poles if I can't find any. I have line from the panel pull tie-outs that I connect to the trekking pole or stick and it's good to go.
Where exactly are you located? I'm a hanger and get out when I can. From Sacramento, a lot of trips to the Sierra Nevada - Desolation, Meiss Wilderness, Carson Pass, Sonora Pass, Yosemite...
I have a pair of the 15' Dyneema/Poly tree straps and I am able to stuff them into the stock Dutch stuff sack, along with my Dutch Half-Wit, Spiders, and Dutch Clip, with room to spare. So, not big...
I have 2 pairs of spiders, one on poly and one on the dyneema/poly pro blend and I noticed that the dyneema/poly pro blend is harder to slide and move. Not impossible, just more challenging. The good...
14 days, with the last 3 being short days (8-10 miles) because I was going too fast and had a ride scheduled.
Yeap, realized all my pics are with the UQ inside out and it still kept me warm down below freezing. We were hanging up to 10,500' along the Sierra Nevada and never felt any coolness at all. Love...
Ah, you're right. I looked at my order and the blue is the inside color! :) Well, suffice to say, hanging it inside out still kept me warm lol
Hmmm you could be right, since being on the outside won't block the wind... lemme email George and find out if Im a dofus for hanging it inside out...
Used them with Dutch Spiders and Dutch Clips on my JMT thru-hike a couple of weeks ago, worked great :) Only problem I had was a hole in my Dutch Half-Wit, right in the middle when I rubbed the...
I'm only 5'8'' tall, but used a Loco Libre Habanero 10 UQ (80'' long, 800 fill) for my recent JMT thru-hike and also own a Jarbridge River 4-season and New River Long synthetic underquilts sold...
Love my cuben sleeve from Hammock Gear. Used it on my JMT thru-hike this summer and made setup and take-down a breeze. Quick and easy to use, slide on and slide off. I had the factory stuff-sack for...
There's talk of getting another hang together in Northern California. Chime in if you're interested. I personally have extra of everything :)
...
I own the Static V Luxe Insulated (red one) and have used it in my Dutch 11' single hammock and it works great. Kept me warm down to mid 30s and I haven't had a chance to try to take it down to lower...
The doors on the Superfly come in handy in the wind and I've also appreciated it in the rain, too. Buy one cry once right?
Did a solo overnight trip into the Desolation Wilderness. Forecast was for 70s with winds 20-25 mph, gusts up to 50 mph.
Got to the ranger station at 7:45 am and there was a line. Desolation...
I'm in. Any areas really interest you?
California here and I camp from the coast to the Sierra Nevada. Now use 15' tree straps from Dutch, because of too many encounters with huge trees :) Rather have excess hanging than not enough and...
I'm open to any location and weekend.
I usually hang in Desolation Wilderness, Meiss wilderness, Carson Pass. Would love to explore other areas.
Once we pick a location and date, I am sure we can...
I am down to hang with you any time. I'm currently going out every weekend (hammocking) for the next month to train for the JMT and will be back by September. I will do anything from Tahoe National...
Make sure you use camelcamelcamel to confirm that the prices are actually low and not the typical retailer trick of fake savings.
I love my Dutch Spiders with Dutch clips on my 15' tree straps. Just throw the end with the Dutch clip around tree, clip in, and adjust the Spiders as desired. Repeat on the other side and done.
Ordered some today, along with some other things, as usual :)
That tarp should cover your hammock fine. Hang the hammock with more slack so you're closer to 30 degrees and it'll provide more than enough coverage. Since those trees are farther apart, you'll have...
Don't know why your photos didn't show, but here they are: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4NR2FSNRgAfMnd1WHRoN2Q0TlU
I will add that I really enjoyed this backpacking trip, the people I met,...
