Does anyone know how much weight 3/4" grosgrain can take? I was wondering about how much load a seam on a bugnet would take if it was fixed at each end of the hammock like a ridgeline, or whether it...

From what I understand of the forces involved (3 years of engineering, so don't quote me :) ), box stitching would be best if attached to a panel, whereas bartacking is better when attached to a...
I'll try that then. I don't really need to use the webbing again, as it's only short pieces for attachments.
How about handsewing webbing in a loop? I wanted to put a D ring on a piece of webbing...
I'm trying to remove some webbing that's bartacked to coated nylon, and I'm having a really hard time with the bartacking. It's so tight that I wonder whether they used some kind of hydraulic press...
Wombats are cuddly little vegans. They have big claws that they use to dig their burrows, but I've never heard of them hurting anyone. It's more funny than frightening. Kind of like being charged by...
What do you mean by 'lounge' in your HH? Do you mean folding it in half and sitting on the fabric part like in the pictures at Sgt Rock's site?
It's funny that the 'string ends' are in almost universal use in South America. I wonder if it's just because the body of the hammocks are made of such heavy material, or whether it's perhaps...
lol - In Australia we have wombats, and they're a bit short sighted, and rather 'portly'. when a walker stumbles upon one, they seem to think " Oh-oh, Hmmm...I'll just escape by running between his...
Can you elaborate on that at all? What were the failings of the setup? And what's 'omni tape'?
My hammock is 10' 6" long, and I really can't get my head around being able to operate a drawstring on the end of a sock. Do you use a fixed ridgeline?
Has anyone tried just sewing a rectangle of netting onto one side of the hammock like a Byer? I was thinking that it could just have a zip on one side and otherwise be sewed right round, but only...

This is a painting of a camp in the Amazon jungle by the Peruvian shaman Pablo Amaringo. The 'tents' in the background are 'bugnet...
I still don't get how it's an improvement over a pair of O rings. The O rings would be lighter and could do away with the bit of webbing between the rope and the main strap.
Obviously the next option is baby oil, although canola maintains its slipperyness for much longer ;)
I hear that certain shops sell water based flavoured lubricants that might be worth a try.
At least he didn't say 'corn fed'.
No ultralighter would settle for anything heavier than a hole in the floor and two footprints drawn with a felt pen :)
By 'stupid' I didn't mean that using buckles or rings was stupid - I was referring to the stupid things that every human does every day - myself included. Have you ever put your boots on, laced them...
I was at my local drug...um, equipment dealer's place the other day and I looked at a few climbing 'biners that could take 1000 lb + load. They were frikkin' huge, and heavy too.
lol - my new 30 litre Mammut pack arrived today (only 6 days from Wales to Australia!) and I've just spent 3 hours trying to figure out what I can cut off :) After two hours Ii was thinking about...
The numbers given for no-seeum at Quest Outfitters are 1.1 oz sq yd and $2.95 a yd. The nanoseeum at Thru Hiker is 0.71 oz sq yd and $6.84 a yd. That's about 35% lighter. Thinking out loud (in...
You get the good O rings at places that sell boat fittings. You can also get titanium ones. The stainless yacht O rings can handle several tonnes, so you don't really need to worry about strength.
...
Has anyone used that stuff? Thru hiker sells it and apparently it's a lot lighter than garden variety no seeum netting. I'm about to order some bug netting for...um...my hammock fetish, but I'm...
Perfect? Do you consider the temperature of your bath to be 'perfect' when you can break the layer of ice on it without using an axe?
Imo 'perfect' is 25 degrees Celsius.
Quest Outfitters have it too: http://www.questoutfitters.com/narrow_roll_goods.htm#THREAD
That 'LuxuryLite' thingie made me laugh - a lot :)
I needed it too. I have an exam in the morning and I still need to read a few hundred pages of Plutarch. **** those pesky Scipios, Gracchis and...
They're only for the elite Space Cadet squadron. In order to get one you have to be able to recite the Complete Works of Leonard Nimoy - in Vulcan.
If you have a hairy back then you could consider a velcro pad on the pack instead of straps.
Looking at ethnic engineering, there's always the 'forehead strap' approach.
Just how silly are you...
The physics of attaching the straps above your shoulders is really messed up :)
You can't get perfectly flat in a hammock because when it opens out the sides have to be higher than the centre. You could whip one with sides longer than the centre but that would be weird.
lol - the phrase 'Only in America' comes to mind.
How unimaginably tacky :)
Have you got a close up of how it's all tied together? Is that a ridgeline lurking under there?
You could probably tie a knot in the end of the rope, then wrap the webbiing around it lengthwise and whip it (whip it good).
My motto is "Why put off until tomorrow what you can get away with never doing at all" :)
I suspect that my problem stems from always having found it really easy to pass. Someone once told me that...
lol - I have an essay due on Friday, another one the week after and an exam the week after that. I spent all day yesterday playing Starcraft. If procrastination ever becomes an Olympic sport I'll be...
I think that once around the tree and a couple of half hitches (or twice and a clove hitch) is all you need. Apart from that it just comes down to neatness. If you have some strap left over then keep...
If you always use a ridgeline, then why not just whip on a single length of webbing that runs from tree to tree - no sewing, no knots, no nothing.
I've mulled over Patti's setup and I suspect that the silnylon might be in there so you can stand up in the net withough getting out. That would allow you to tip out the cracker crumbs and chocolate...
You could use some nylon fishing net. That weighs approximately 'bugger all', as we say in the mother tongue.
Not yet, but I soon will be
But Neo, you love all of your hammocks ;)
Initially Peru. As to why, it's more a case of why not? I'm intending to have a go at teaching English and travelling between contracts, so it's all rather open ended.
Of course, I could cite...
Nice enough, I'm sure. However, as shocking as it may seem, there are some things in life that I would rather look at than 'hammock related thingies'.
Since I'm moving to South America soon, South...
For me the Clark is an example of the design ethos of adding things to a basic concept until it works. NASA uses the same ethos, which is probably why their stuff is so heavy and expensive, and keeps...
Yeah using a bit of string on a piece of cardboard sounds easy enough. You could stick pins in it and then bend a thin batten around the pins to mark it. I'd be inclined to cut it using the batten as...
The only problem with posting everything here is that someone has to pay for the bandwidth. A trip report or pics of making something is likely to have a dozen or so photos at least.
It all adds...
Perhaps I'm a bit thick, but what's the advantage of whipping when compared to passing the rope though a hem at each end?
I think mine is 4'6" wide, which feels about right. The fabric is fairly high opposite the head and feet, but I don't find it a problem. As long as you hang it loose and always lay diagonally it's...
I had mine set up in my bedroom for a couple of months when I first got it, just so I could get the 'hang' of it. It hung neatly between the end of the rail in my wardrobe and the beam between the...
lol - I've done that too but never overnight! The only time I get caught in on flat ground, otherwise I know which way is up.
I like Quest Outfitters simply because they give the weights of everything.
