Just read this - if I understand you correctly, you're using the elastic loops sewn to the hammock hem to attach the underquilt directly to the hammock instead of using the shock cord to the...
That's gotta be hugely heavy - I have a 3" twin memory foam mattress pad and it weighs probably 25-30 lbs.
Certainly can't hurt to try it out and see!
Took the traveler home and set it up for the g/f...she laid in it for about a half hour and started talking about his'n'hers hammocks.... :)
Being as the OP is in England, I imagine he's using periods in place of commas in the numbers.
Captain Smiley: They're swingin' in what we call, Camp Smiley Conastogas. They're canvas painter's dropcloths from Wal Mart. Washed about 4 times they're super cozy.
Looks like Dutch clips to me, too - look at the left tree. As for height, hiking poles make a good extension to push the straps further up the tree, I'm told...
You know you were going to do it anyway, just to see the smile on her face - it's a Daddy thing. :)
Wouldn't the canister of argon to inflate it with negate the weight savings?
Congrats!! Do you make that "doodoodoodoodoo" noise when you run, now? ;)
So, now you're a Doner? :D:lol:
I'm feeling ya there - my g/f says I'd sweat in a blizzard...and she might just be right!!

Thanks for the reply - I figured 4" was a bit much, but wanted to double check. It seems to seal at the shoulder end pretty well and around the sides - the foot, not so much. It was...
Working on one of these, myself - had to use light bungee cords instead of shock cord, though - it was all they had at the PX.
More tweaking is in order, but I think it'll work. I had about 4"...
Thanks!
Tomorrow's agenda is to go hit the PX again and see if they have any shockcord - thinking about making a PLUQ instead of using the GI pad.
....first hang!!
Got moved into the new quarters a few days ago. Put the padeyes up this morning and hung the traveler. I'm using PX carabiners (22kn strength) and whoopies, but I'm going to put...
If you look at the center pic, you'll see that the eye of the sling is larksheaded around the tree hugger and the adjustable side is toward the hammock, connected by the biner.
Best of luck with the business, Tim...and welcome to HF
Mine's ok (coming in from dot-mil).
Yes, that's exactly it... thread here.
Actual memory foam would be way too heavy - it's somewhere around 5 lbs/cubic foot as I recall.
That's why I went with silver - no smurf hands!!
Most of the posts I've seen in that regard seem to have been bad toggle material (rotten trail sticks, etc) or hanging the suspension *on* the toggle rather than behind the marlinspike knot.
They have, at least in some locations... Schipol, Heathrow and Gatwick have the "YOTEL" capsules - prices are comparable to the local hotels.
Good luck - hope they help!
No worries, Rev...just wanted to give the credit where it was due.
:lol::lol:
Well, Rev actually said it first...
I've got a spreadsheet where I can plug in stuff like this and get the numbers back...
The recommended RL length is 83% of the total hammock length. 83% of 10 feet (120 inches) is 99.6" - call it 100 inches. Putting the RL at 100" would help you lay flatter, I bet.
Nacrabiners, Rain Man.
:lol::lol::lol:
Duly noted!!
I knew you were being a smart-aleck... I have a well developed case of it myself!! :)
No need to do any remodeling on my account...was just curious if you'd done it and what the result was.
...
I never said it couldn't be done at all, Cannibal...I said the numbers don't work for a 30° hang. How well does your WB hang in there, and is the RL tight?
How so?
Using a 8 foot ceiling, and assuming a 100" RL hammock and a 30° hang angle, you get :
12 foot ceiling: 83" RL height
16 foot ceiling: 69" RL height
20 foot ceiling: 55" RL height
Looks nice!!
It's a little hard to tell in the first photo - did you break the edges so that they don't abrade your webbing?
I did mine last night - once I figured out what lengths I wanted, it went quickly, maybe 10 minutes per.
Hi nacra -
The line length (circumference) for the fixed eye portion was 8". That worked out just about perfectly to larkshead around the WB whipping.
I went 10" on the adjustable bury - it's...
And....they're done!
As advertised, they went quickly once I figured out what all my measurements needed to be.
Thanks to all for their help!
That's good enough for me... I was worried about making it weaker than what was described in the discussion about breaking points.
Thanks, Opie, and everyone else who responded.
Understood - but wouldn't it have more of an effect if it's at the end of the fixed bury, due to the the end of the fixed bury making the braid tighter at that spot?
Thanks! I didn't know if having the adjustable leg exit right at the end of the fixed bury would act like an untapered splice or not.
Cool - Is there a certain "clear length" that's needed to separate the fixed bury and the adjustable bury?
Good to know.
The marlin splice is for the brummel, right?
Thanks!
jackyb - thanks for the info!
Brian - I thought the bury for a locked brummel still needed to be in the 9" range? Lemme look up the brummel whoopie thread and the stuff from samson about the...
Thanks, dhess - it looked like cotton to me, but it's still nice to have confirmation.
Still reading through the whoopie thread and trying to figure out lengths and such...what's a good size to...
Interesting stuff...thanks, Knotty.
Now I just have to figure out what measurements I need for *that*....
Saw that (re-reading the whoopie and brummel threads now), but I thought it de-rated the line severely?
...or fixing to, rather.
Have a question for the .mil folks, though - is the thread in the military sewing kits from the PX cotton or synthetic? I *think* it's cotton, but would like to know for...
Goes by the number of posts
Good man - hang your own hammock (HYOH) - and why 'fix' something that's working, right?
I think the 'cheerleading' for certain hammocks is due to customer satisfaction and build quality. ...
Hi Ursule - what things do you like and not like about the Byer?
That will drive the search for a new hammock more than anything else - and, if there's nothing wrong with the Byer, why upgrade?
